So I re watched The Stolen Earth and Journey's End on BBC1 this afternoon, and
I was slightly more accepting of the beach scene this time around. The first time, I've told a few people, what ran through my mind the most was that even though Rose was going to be able to be with the Doctor, it wasn't the 'proper' Doctor. Somewhere I read that some people think of it as a bit of a fanfiction ending for Rose, and I can kind of see what they mean, but for me a fanfiction ending would have been for her to end up with the Time Lord Doctor rather than having a human Doctor turn up and stay with her. Which in some ways is better, because as stated they can grow old together ~ I'm not entirely sure TL!Doctor would have been able to handle doing the same thing with Rose, given that he pretty much told her that he didn't go back for Sarah Jane for that reason, and he didn't love SJ. At least not in the same way as Rose.
David sold the beach scene for me in the end, with both his performances. I would have still like TL!Doctor to have said those words we'll never hear, rather than human!Doctor. His face as the human!Doctor while Rose was talking to TL!Doctor made me want to hug him, he looked so sad. Still, though in some ways I'd like to know what happens with them, I'd rather read it in fiction I think. Showing it on screen would definitely ruin it, and I think us fans can imagine their fates far better than anything on tv. Plus, for me, though we finally got Rose and the Doctor together, after a fashion, her 'first' departure on that beach was far more heartbreaking. Which also makes me think how in my opinion, Donna's first ever scene on DW should have been a post credits teaser, like they've done this time. I like Donna, especially after this last series, but her showing up in the Tardis and shouting at the Doctor ruins the emotion of Rose's declaration and his failure to do the same.
My biggest disappointment of the entire finale however, was that after all that Bad Wolf stuff at the end of Turn Left, we got nothing over the two parter. At least nothing so obvious that I noticed it, not even a 'Jack isn't dead because of you Rose' conversation. In some ways, I would have liked to see a BW reappearance, though obviously that couldn't really happen. Donna had a similar look in her eyes though, when the Time Lord mind kicked in. Aw, Donna. I'll miss you. And Wilf. :(
Ok, I so did not mean to ramble on that much about one small part of my re watch.:S Ah well, at least my inner shipper is somewhat satisfied.
