Violins and Fang Rock

So the violin thingy went quite well :-). Turns out it was a group of fourteen year old Japanese girls who knew virtually nothing about the violin, so I just told them really basic stuff (which was comfortable for me, since I'm really not a specialist :-). Then they got to try out the violin, and they really enjoyed that.

The best thing was when I got there in the morning and saw a viol lying next to the violins. My director saw me looking at it, and said it was there so that I could show them what a violin isn't, and that the piano teacher (who was also there) knew how to hold it - and I realised that he didn't know that I play viol. I didn't say anything but just took the viol and started tuning it - at which point my director did a double take. He wasn't expecting that :-). Anyway - that gave me an opportunity to tell the girls something about the viol as well, and they seemed interested, as it's an instrument most of them will never have heard of.

So, all it all it was great fun, but I'm also quite relieved that it's over :-P

And, since I'm in a Old Who mood lately: Finished "The Horror of Fang Rock".

I enjoyed it :-). Random bits I liked:

The setting. I liked the claustrophobic feel of the lighthouse, and the various sounds (like the horn thingy) created an intersting atmosphere.

Leela. This is the first Leela story I've seen so far, and I liked her quite a bit more than I thought I would. I love her "no nonsense" attitude, and she has a good chemistry with the Doctor. And she was the one who had the life saving idea in the end - go Leela! :-)

"Your eye colour has changed." A strangely moving little scene, showing a tender side to the Fourth Doctor that you don't see that often (or at least I haven't seen until now).

Speaking of Fourth Doctor: there were some great crazy moments in this story. Loved the "You need to go to London? You have no chance in this fog" interation, and the "I have news for you - we are under attack und by morning we might all be dead" manic smile.

The Ruton (aka the shiny green blob thingy). I always like it when we see nonhumanoid lifeforms (though the whole thing with it kreeping up the stairs got a bit repetitious ;-)

The Doctor throwing away the diamonds he doesn't need :-)

"It is fitting to celebrate the death of an enemy." - "Not by my book." Go Doctor.

Anyway - that's all I can think of for now. Started "Tomb of the Cybermen" last night after finishing Fang Rock, but I was just too tired and fell right asleep (though I did see enough of the Second Doctor to remind me that I really like him as well).
