I'm going through a phase of being obsessed with period costume dramas, particularly BBC movies and miniseries. This started when I watched
Pride and Prejudice (1995) a few weeks ago. And then watched it again. And then returned it to the rental store, missed it so much I had to order my own copy and then watched it again and again. And then I read some of the IMDB message board about the movie and saw so many strong suggestions for
North and South, I ordered that too. While I don't care as much for the dark mood of much of the movie (it's set in cold, dark, industrial north England instead of the pretty countryside of south England) it's a wonderful movie. And oh my god the ending... the best ending ever. And I'd take Mr. Thorton over Mr. Darcy anyday. I'm wanting now to order a couple others,
Wives and Daughters and
The Way We Live Now. Both are kind of expensive though, so it might be awhile.
I thought I found a cheap copy of The Way We Live Now last night on ebay. But I accidentally bid on a VHS copy. I realized immediately after I had bid and wrote the person asking them to cancel my bid. But the auction ended before the saw my email, or they just don't care. Gggggrrrrr. I don't even own a VCR and really don't want to pay for it. What really happens if you don't pay for an ebay item? A bad feedback score? I think I'm going to risk it. I don't have money to waste like that.
When I'm stressed I have A LOT of trouble sleeping. I find these kinds of movies so relaxing and they've really been helping me fall asleep at night. I don't mean by that that they are boring. It's more than they have nice even volume levels, soothing voices rarely raised, no annoying american music soundtracks blaring songs every new scene. They give my mind something to think about other than stressful stuff and I manage to close my eyes and drift off with the movie in the background.
