This is a sad, sad list. Since I'm not commuting anymore I'm not listening to audiobooks. And I don't have time for reading other than school stuff. So it's basically my binge list from when I was in Colorado.
Jan - Jun:
Mary Queen of Scotland and the Isles - Margaret George
To be fair, it's very very long. Still I've never taken 6 months to read a book before, in my life. It's good, but not my favorite Margaret George novel, those would be
The Autobiography of Henry VIII and
The Memoirs of Cleopatra. I'm also anxious to read her new one,
Helen of Troy but it might have to wait until my next vacation.
Aug:
Trading Up - Candace Bushnell
It sucks, don't read it. I was just in the mood for something easy and trashy after the huge historical fiction novel. It's by the author of Sex and the City, but it's just not interesting. Flat, flat characters that inspire no empathy in the reader whatsoever.
Encyclopedia of an Ordinary Life - Amy Krouse Rosenthal
So original and funny. I totally want a biography like this about myself. Probably will be enjoyed most by 30 something women whose ordinary lives move roughly parallel to this one, just because we relate to the same childhood tv commercials, fashion mistakes etc. The amazon page has great previews of the random stuff found within her book.
Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West - Gregory Maguire
I heard almost exclusively great things about this but I just couldn't get into it. I felt like a skimmed a lot of boring stuff. The politics of Oz interests me not at all.
Sideways - Rex Pickett
I decided to read this after watching the movie. The two really aren't that different, minus a couple scenes that were cut. Both are good.
The Secret Life of Bees - Sue Monk Kidd
Wonderful, wonderful book. It's a pretty easy read, but with great characters and a wonderful ability to create atmosphere that feels so real, you might as well be there smelling warm southern air rich with honey and buzzing with bees. Loved it.
The History of Love - Nicole Krauss
About halfway through. It's very well written and interesting.
Books from last year.
