The Yankees' playoff run has ended. Thirteen playoff appearances in a row is pretty impressive. Not as impressive as, say,
14 division titles in a row, but not bad.
And only the Yankees (and ESPN) could be so self-aggrandizing about closing their stadium. There wasn't this much hoopla over the death of Comiskey Park, which was built 13 before "The Stadium" (only New Yorkers would call their stadium "The Stadium," as though there were no others of importance in the world; they also call New York City simply "The City" and expect everyone to know which one they mean*).
I have to admit I'm surprised MLB scheduled The Last Game Ever at "The Stadium" on a day other than the regular-season finale and against the Orioles instead of the Red Sox. Then again, it was probably for the best - it would have overwhelmed the down-to-the-wire playoff races and so exhausted the Baseball Tonight crew that they wouldn't have any energy left for the baseball that matters - the playoffs.
Which, for the first time since 1990, will not feature either the Yankees or the Braves. How will Tim McCarver survive?
* Of course, San Franciscans also refer to their city as "The City," but only locally. That only pisses off Oakland. NYC pisses off everybody.
