Obama's big speech

I haven't had a chance to watch it yet; I keep getting interrupted by work. I have read the text (link from curt_holman) and it's powerful stuff. Wouldn't it be nice to have a leader who can think so coherently? Someone who can grasp a complex issue, see through it, and help make others understand? Far better than some yahoo who interprets a painting of a Read more... )

Best 37 minutes I've spent in months.

The backlash to his eloquence and candor is gonna be ugly and if it wins out in the end I think you can just write this country off.

Half of Hillary's complaint (also appropriated by the GOP - thanks Hillary!) about Obama is that he's too eloquent. She's just jealous she can't give a speech half as well as he or her husband can.

I'll have to watch to be sure, but it might be hard to grab pithy sound bites out of this. It'll be hard to overpower "Not God bless America! - God damn America!" And it's frighteningly easy to debunk a 45 minute speech just by saying "He's all talk. What's he going to do about it?"

But his response to that needs to be - at least he's talking about it as opposed to those who refuse to talk about it and let the problem fester. That will prove to have been a landmark speech though, and a lot fo what comes next is going to be judged by its yardstick.

He's the first politician to have the balls to take on something like this. I hope it doesn't bite him in the ass.

That was seriously...just damn. I read the transcript. It makes me want to watch the clip.

It makes me think about how it would be to live in a country run by someone who saw the world that way. And for the first time in a long time I feel passionate about a candidate.

This may be the first time I've ever actually liked a candidate. Every other election, it's been about keeping someone else out of office.
