Safely in NY. The flight took us over Lake Lanier, or what's left of it. I couldn't resist snapping a few pictures. The weather here is very different than back home: low clouds and 50s vs. blue sky and 70s. So I didn't have time to get out the camera to snap pictures of Brooklyn from above. Perfect grids of streets surrounding rows of similar houses with scattered trees gorgeous with vibrant reds or golds or oranges. But we broke free of the clouds too low and within just a couple of minutes had landed at JFK.
I'd post the shots of Lanier, but SchmuckBoy here forgot a vital adapter that allows me to use any monitor with my Mac mini. I remembered everything else. Just one of the things that I must have to accomplish most of what I hoped to do this weekend.
We'll stop by a Circuit City or possibly an Apple Store tomorrow on the way back from Manhattan.
Did I mention I have an ALL ACCESS pass to the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade? I'm pretty sure I did. Because I have one. It's sitting right there on top of my bag. With my camera. And 4GB worth of memory cards.
We've been assigned to cover a couple of specific floats for parade sponsors, plus a couple of general things (such as "clown groups") from the Midtown/Columbus Circle/Times Square area. And another shot from Herald Square, near the parade's end. We even have the super-secret parade schedule to help us plan where we need to be.
Tomorrow, we'll head into town to explore the build area where they'll be preparing the balloons and floats for the parade. Some of it is open to the public, but we'll be able to get much closer than the riff-raff good people of the city.
I'm cautiously excited about this. I've shot lots of parades before, but never one this big and never as a job (sort of) and never where I could walk right into the middle of it without getting yelled at. I could screw up plenty and no one would know or care. I guess I still can, since it's really my dad's name on everything (except my pass), but I don't want to waste the opportunity. I'm just going to do my thing and stay out of the way of the professionals since I'm along for the ride and they're trying to pay their rent, you know? It's going to be fun, dammit.
thanksgiving,
