I'm still disappointed that I didn't find a decent two-bedroom apartment when I moved last winter. As it was, I got a second very small room that sort-of can work as an office. I bought a "day sofa" from World Market for like $300 that folds into a twin bed, but I'm still looking forward to the Holy Grail of an actual guest bedroom.
Keep in mind that I may be invested in the outcome, but, if you have the room for it, bite the bullet and buy the guest-room bed. It really is a lot more welcoming than a living-room sofa, and I just feel like, now that we're in our mid-30s, if we *can* have a guest-room bed, we should. (See above note about how I don't!)
Furniture shopping definitely isn't easy. I'm always afraid I'm paying more than I should or that I didn't get the selection I might have wanted. I haven't been to IKEA since I was 24 or so (I'd have to drive to Houston to visit the nearest one), but I know people in their 30s and 40s who still consider it a mandatory stop when shopping. I've also found cheap, attractive shelves at Target. captainoz and I have both found good things at Cost Plus World Market, if you have one.
As for the "what if it doesn't fit in the next place" worry, I worry about that too. In the end, though, you take on new stuff, and it just changes what your requirements are. (Like Fizzgig, for example. Now you're going to be looking for places that accept pets.) If, at some point in the future, you're looking at a place that doesn't have a guest room, you can always sell the stuff. It's the Circle of Life. ;-)
I think I'll be getting a bed, rather than a futon, it's just a matter what size and how much money. I have a queen in my room, so all my extra sheets, etc are that size.
Except for that disaster with that first bed, I've never been furniture shopping. I have no idea what to even look for. I may just window shop at IKEA if for no other reason than to get an idea of what's out there. And, you know, to say that I've been.
I need to get over the whole not-wanting-to-move-stuff-I-don't-want thing. I learned the magic of Craig's List from Amy's yard sale last year. She sold practically everything she owned in a week. No reason I can't do the same.
Don't worry, I'll have something for you by the time you get here.
I'm thinking a new bed, at least. The thought of a second-hand bed from a stranger is kind of creepy. It wouldn't stop me from selling a bed on Craigslist, but buying one.
I should get shelves that way, though. The problem may be transport.
