I was inordinately rewarded for being late for work this morning. Jeff Daniels was on the radio pimping his new movie, and the station let him pick the music. He went with this amazing live acoustic version of "Born to Run." It was just Bruce, his guitar, the crowd, and (alas) a harmonica.
I've known most of the
lyrics forever, but they really crystalized in this spare version. Everyone quotes the opening verse and, of course, the "velvet rims" line, but I never noticed what is now my favorite line:
I'll love you with all the madness in my soul
Everybody's always called Springsteen a poet, but I never really believed them until this morning (even with "The Rising").
The amusement park rises bold and stark
Kids are huddled on the beach in a mist
PS: As an added bonus, the song started about 15 seconds after I pulled out of my driveway and ended just as I pulled into my parking space. Excellent.
