not again?! and the beginning of the end of an era

Aug 04, 2007 19:15

So LJ is banning fannish accounts again, this time artists. Damn.

I agree with everyone that this is the final straw. LJ isn't safe for fandom anymore.

At the same time, I am NOT leaving just yet. Why? Because there is no place safer, not until we build one, and I think that fragmenting the fandom in the midst of a crisis by having everyone fly off to different supposed havens that may not turn out to be any better than LJ itself can only hurt us.

I'm here until we figure this out. And then when I know where I'm moving is going to be worth the move, I'm gone.

This is it, LJ. I'm done recommending you, I'm done defending you, and I'm through with trying to find a way to stay.

My money is on the best permanent solution resting with fanarchive.

Patience, folks. Make sure 6A knows we're mad as hell, and don't leave without a fight. But yeah, even though it hurts more than they will ever actually understand, leave when the time is right.

I really don't like seeing the era of LJ in my life end. It's meant more to me than I can possibly put in words. Damn.

eta: In case it wasn't clear, when I talk about moving, I'm not talking about sometime next week. It might take a year to build the kind of legally and communally robust solution we need. I am not convinced that *any* of the currently extant alternatives I've seen discussed on my flist will fit the bill for the long haul. Until such a time as I have something fit to flee to, I will no longer be recommending 6A services and will limit all other support of 6A including financial, and intend to kick up quite a bit of noise (see soon-to-be-written post regarding that). But I am not planning or advocating an immediate rush for the hills. More discussion in the comments.
