The first time was when she was young- still wearing pigtails and mary janes, playing in the sandbox with all the other kids. They were playing doctor and nurse, and he said that she couldn't be the doctor because she was a girl. She punched him to prove him wrong.
The second time was at summer camp, watching the lifeguard by the lake row slowly though, making sure everyone was safe. Joan noticed a split-second before the girl did, and she watched her give CPR to the kid that was pushed under for too long.
The third time was when her legs were pinned and she could feel the blood running out of her best friend's stomach as she desperately pushed the cloth of her jacket deeper, despite his pleas for her to stop. It took too long for the police to arrive on the desolate highway.
The fourth time was when she was in a dive bar in a bad part of the neighborhood, shaking and longing for another hit. She could feel herself deteriorate and she knew that if she didn't help herself, no one else would.
The fifth time was when she was graduating medical school, diploma in hand and smile on her face. She didn't care that no one was there to watch her, all she cared about were the fading scars and the hope that everything would turn out for the best.
