I : [Audio,Text, Video]

[There’s the sound of a lot of fiddling with the device by careless hands that have never had any experience with handling electronics, and finally a voice mutters to itself in a gentle drawl.] It doesn’t look like any relic I’ve ever seen before... Ohhh, runes!

[And the voice falls silent as she submits a rather plain text post:] A B C D E hello

[It's a good thing that he lived in World's End before he came to Demeleier, or those feline features would really have confused him. As it is, they're surprising, but not on the whole completely weird. It allows him to give a measured, easy response.]

I'm afraid we don't use a monetary system in Demeleier, ma'am, and I'd advise keeping a hold of the device. It's used to contact the other residents who live here.

My name is Angeal Hewley. Is there anything I can help you with?

No monetary system? [Sighing in exasperation, as though it's the biggest inconvenience of all.] Fine, I will keep it. Linkpearls don't exactly fetch a high price, if that's all this is.

[Speaking of which, she should probably dig that broken pearl out of her ear.] I'm Yenyoji Quryoja. Got a map for me, Angeal?

Of course. Just give me a moment.

[Yen is silent for a few beats before she tries to stifle a giggle. Okay, the map isn't THAT bad, but it's pretty clear none of them is a professional cartographer.] Well, I don't know how what your needs are, but if your exploring parties require a black mage, you have one.

...A link of iron? What am I supposed to do with that?

[It sounds almost like Angeal is grinning himself. He did say it was 'quite basic' - an understatement, of course.] Our exploring parties make themselves up between Watch shifts, for the most part. I'm sure you could put the word out over the network, on in at the Town Hall.

As for the iron, it's vitally important for your safety here. Currently, we're in a lull. Usually, however, we are harassed by creatures known as 'Fae'. Iron is the only thing we know that is guaranteed effective against them.

Okay, got it. [See, she's already trying to be productive. She is proud of herself for not immediately resorting to setting things on fire.]

So, what, do I wear it like equipment, wave it at them like a religious icon, shove it up their noses...?

...do they have noses?

Some of them do.

No, the iron acts as a general repellent. Touching it seems to be to them what touching acid is to one of us. Most of the more intelligent ones will keep a distance if they know you have even some iron on your person. In extreme cases, you can drag it across their skin and throw them off.

Huh. That's quite practical. [Already trying to decide where to "equip" it...]

Thanks for the tip, Ang!

['Ang'? Well if that doesn't sound yeasty and unpleasant...

There's only mild amusement in his voice though.]

Angeal is fine.

Will you be all right by yourself, or would you like a tour?
