WIP AMNESTY: That SGA/Key's Watcher Thing

Title: That SGA/Key’s Watcher Thing
Fandoms Colliding: SGA/BtVS/Anita Blake
Rating: Not worth stressing over
Pairings: Rodney and John’s hair. Really! Okay, not. If I ever manage to write this, it will be McShep
Notes 1: I’ve started and abandoned a few stories in SGA, mostly because the fandom intimidates the hell out of me, but also because I’m having a hard time getting into the characters’ head. I’m trying to get over it, but still, the other two stories I post for wip_amnesty will be SGA (or a crossover of SGA and something else).
Notes 2: This doesn’t work as an overt offshoot of the Key’s Watcher ‘verse, though I think it might if I take a more subtle approach. Meanwhile, I’m tossing it out to you to read and point and laugh -- or possibly offer suggestions. I’m good either way.

Story started January 2008.

“Ooh, look at the brave man!”

Rodney absolutely didn’t shriek. If anything, he gave a manly grunt of surprise before backing himself up against a wall to get away from the not-at-all-sexy vampire.

“I’m - I’m - I’m a customer. Not an entrée,” he said, making vague shooing motions with his hands and definitely not looking into the vampire’s eyes.

“Come to see the pretty boys dance, have you?” The vampire, no doubt in an effort to capture his gaze, pushed even further into Rodney’s personal space.

“Yes. No.” Alright, he should sound more certain, but he didn’t know how anyone could think under these circumstances.

“Really? That’s a shame,” cooed the vampire, and since when did vampires coo? They were supposed to be scary, not - not -

“Ripper.”

Rodney let loose with another manly grunt of surprise as a second vampire put his hand on the first vampire’s shoulder. He told himself that surprise was an entirely reasonable reaction, because really, there were a lot of women in the bar - yes, all right, strip club - who would dearly love to be in his place right now. Why they weren’t was a complete mystery to him.

“Sod off,” said Ripper, without turning away from Rodney. “Find your own.”

The second vampire shook his head. “I don’t think so. Remember the last time this happened?”

Ripper stiffened up and moved away a few inches. It was enough to give Rodney some much needed breathing space.

“What’ll you do then, run to Daddy?” Rodney wasn’t exactly up on human social cues, let alone vampiric ones, but even he could hear the fine edge of unhappy tension in Ripper’s voice.

“Worse,” said the second vampire. He leaned in close to Ripper’s ear and said in a low voice, “I’ll tell Rupert.”

Rodney swore he hadn’t even blinked between the moment Ripper was in his face and the next, when he was against the wall next to Rodney with the second vampire holding him up by the throat. He started to edge away, but the second vampire, without even looking at him, put his hand out to keep Rodney there.

In a strangled voice, Ripper said, “I’m older than you.”

“And yet you’re the one against the wall.” He leaned in closer to Ripper. “When I let you down, you’re going to walk away.”

“Can’t tell me what to do.” Ripper sounded like a sullen teenager. Well. As sullen as anyone could sound while they were being strangled.

“Rupert seems to think otherwise. Want to take it up with him?”

There was another odd shift, and suddenly, Rodney was alone with the much scarier second vampire, which was more than a little worrisome, because unless he missed his guess - “Lieutenant John Sheppard?”

“Deceased.”

“Excuse me?”

“Lieutenant John Sheppard, Deceased,” he said. “The Air Force has a policy of discharging personnel who get turned.”

Rodney took a moment to process that. “You sound as if that’s a problem.”

“Since they refused to pay out on my life insurance policy when I died, I’d have to say yes, it is a problem.” With that, Sheppard turned and started to walk off.

“Wait!”

Sheppard turned around. “What?”

“I need to talk to you!”

“You already did.”

Sheppard started to walk off again, but Rodney stumbled after him and grabbed him by the arm. “Lieutenant!”
