Having been given permission by his captain, Chekov was in posession of and currently disassembling Kirk's Tone. The captain was getting by on a borrowed one until the boy was done with his. It hopefully wouldn't take too much time to take apart, analyzed, and put back together the small device. Still, the brunette was no engineer which was why Lieutenant Gaila would be coming over shortly to help him in this endeavor. He'd talked to her briefly at his arrival but otherwise knew nothing about the woman aside from that she was an engineer and, well, coming to help.
In the meanwhile, his eagerness to have his hypothesis about the Tones being sentient either confirmed or refuted had gotten the best of him. He had already taken off the cover of the device and was surrounded by several tools in order to take more of it apart. As he meticulously unscrewed certain smaller sections of the Tone, he kept changing tools and eventually a screwdriver ended up being held in-between his teeth while his both hands were working away. So involved in disassembling the Tone already was he that the knock on his door nearly went unnoticed.
