He could only take watching the man pace for so long before it became distracting. It had been well past that threshhold for quite a while and he had settled for simply watching him move back and forth across the room instead of focusing on making certain that his mind was as clear as possible to prevent another repetition of the consequences of his last attempt at this kind of thing. He certainly wasn't expecting a repeat of that terrible situation since he wasn't digging for hidden memories, but it was always a possibility in this place.

Eventually, though, he had to say something. Even if it was just a statement of the obvious.

"You appear distracted."

She was restless that entire morning, anticipating the meld that she had spent so much time planning and preparing for. There was little that she could actually do once it started but remain calm, but even then she felt as responsible for the outcome as he did. She tried not to let her nerves take hold of her, got a real nights sleep for the first time in the past week and tried to keep herself focused on what the outcome would be. On how much this would help Spock.

The walk to their apartment, despite the close proximity, felt like an eternity. She took a deep breath and knocked gently on the door, hoping this whole experience went as quickly and painlessly as possible.

Jim shot Spock a look that clearly said 'No, you think?' He was about to open his mouth to make a smart remark when there was a soft knock on the door. The knot in his gut tightened and he stared at the door dumbly for a moment. This was it. This was really the moment they'd been preparing for. He was going to open that door and Uhura and Spock were going to do their meld thing.

He swallowed hard and steeled his resolve. There was no turning back now, even if he wanted to. So he walked towards the door and opened it to let Uhura in.

He was mostly expecting that look, but there was little response to it other than a raised eyebrow before the knock came on the door and he stood as she entered, though he kept a close eye on the captain. It wasn't exactly a secret that he was against this whole idea, after all. He didn't exactly expect him to try anything, but it was probably best to be prepared, after all. And, if he were entirely honest with himself, he was concerned about the effect this would have on him, even he weren't involved. But there was no turning back now, and he had to be ready.
