There is a very, very bad Windows image exploit which is going around right now. If you're interested in the nitty gritty details, you can read them here

I recommend starting with unreg'ing the dll, and then install the patch (which will require a reboot at the end).
And, of course, and always, it's good to keep your virus checker updated and run regularly. If you know anyone who doesn't have antivirus protection and refuses to pay, I'd like to recommend Clam Win.
I've never used it (which isn't too surprising, since I rarely use Windows), so I looked it up. C-Net rated AVG with a five stars (their highest rating). So, I'll definitely give it a look.
Most of us recommend Spybot for anti-spyware. A few of us recommend Ad-Aware (though I find it nearly useless in the free version, since it won't let you schedule automatic scans), and a few of us recommend ... uhm, I don't remember, hopefully endotoxin does.
We also tend to recommend Firefox/Thunderbird.
I'm not 100% on the difference tween free/paid for AVG - I hear it's some fancypants bells and whistles, but the free one works Just Fine (for personal use only).
would you recommend patch or unreg the dll? Or all 3?

I looked briefly, but I couldn't see exactly what the differences were between the free version of AVG and the for-pay version. Do you know?

Gotcha. Since I'm usually looking for Windows software for my users (who do not qualify as "personal use"), it's good to know that.
