Quick question 'cause I don't wanna go through actually THINKING about this...
would you recommend patch or unreg the dll? Or all 3?

I recommend starting with unreg'ing the dll, and then install the patch (which will require a reboot at the end).

And, of course, and always, it's good to keep your virus checker updated and run regularly. If you know anyone who doesn't have antivirus protection and refuses to pay, I'd like to recommend Clam Win.

I've never used it (which isn't too surprising, since I rarely use Windows), so I looked it up. C-Net rated AVG with a five stars (their highest rating). So, I'll definitely give it a look.

Thanks for pointing it out to me.

It's the one recommended by SWCP, a good local ISP. Feel free to get the free version - it works great and has free updates:

Nice to know! Do you guys endorse any other software for any other purposes?

I looked briefly, but I couldn't see exactly what the differences were between the free version of AVG and the for-pay version. Do you know?

Most of us recommend Spybot for anti-spyware. A few of us recommend Ad-Aware (though I find it nearly useless in the free version, since it won't let you schedule automatic scans), and a few of us recommend ... uhm, I don't remember, hopefully endotoxin does.

We also tend to recommend Firefox/Thunderbird.

I'm not 100% on the difference tween free/paid for AVG - I hear it's some fancypants bells and whistles, but the free one works Just Fine (for personal use only).

Gotcha. Since I'm usually looking for Windows software for my users (who do not qualify as "personal use"), it's good to know that.

Did the patch, did the unreg. My AV is AVG... It's never given me any kind of problems at all. I've used it for a few years, actually :)
