After a bit of time wandering, Haine finally found the proper hallway that contained room 1054. He raised a pale fist to knock but paused, realizing he was about to use the hand that smashed the mirror back in Badou's apartment before coming here. It still hadn't healed with the shards of glass still protruding from his skin. He frowned and lowered the injured hand before restorting to the unharmed hand to knock. This time, it was closer to the surface but he was still hesistating.
What if this wasn't a dream? But didn't he kill her by crushing her skull with his own hands? Maybe he didn't get enough sleep and his tormented mind was being played tricks by the ungrateful mongrel forced to live inside of him? These questions pounded away at his head.
There was only one way to find out.
C'mon Haine, knock.
She was so happy.
Haine, Haine, Big Brother!, Haine. Lily sat on the edge of her bed and kicked her feet back and forth, a smile bright on her face. She was finally going to see Haine, after-when did she last speak to him, two weeks ago?-so long. Would Big Bro Gio be with him? Waaait, didn't he say "things have changed"? Did that mean they weren't friends anymore? Huh.
It didn't matter.
It was Haine.
Lily looked between her door and her communicator anxiously. First, she was going to hug him, then they were going to eat cupcakes, then they were going to play with Angelica, then they were going to play in the snow, then...
There was a brief knock.
He finally managed to muster some courage to face the ghost from his past, but started to grow uneasy. He shifted his weight slightly with a jingle of chains. Doubt nagged its way into the back of his mind as the DOG laughed at his anxiety.
"What will you do when you see her again? Rip her to shreds just like before, Haine?"
"Shut up." He growled to himself, unamused.
There!
There it is!
Lily leapt off her bed and rushed to the door grabbing the knob. She begins to turn it, then stops-what if it was someone else? That would be bad! Lily pulls a chair over and climbs on top to peer through the little peephole beneath the numbers on her door.
White hair, red eyes.
It couldn't be anyone else!
With a perky, happy noise, she jumped off the chair and pulled open the door. Immediately, she threw her arms around Haine's waist and hugged him tightly, her smile bright and sunny.
"Brother!"
He blinked when Lily flew and latched herself to his torso. He didn't move his hands, partial in fear and the other, shock.
She really was alive. Her voice and appearance was the same from what he remembered from long ago.
He tried to speak but his voice was caught in his throat and words were diving off the tip of his tongue. His expression lingered in surprise and shock, looking down at the head full of blond hair.
Lily stepped back and looked up at him, all smiles and sunshine. "You really did get bigger!" She chirped, reaching for his hand. "Just like Giovanni! You look so cool."
Pause.
She blinked and looked to the hand her fingertips just brushed. Blood had stopped leaking from the cuts, but there were still several long shards of glittering glass sticking out of Haine's hand. Lily gasped and took his hand lightly, pulling it towards her. "What happened!? Are you hurt?"
He tried to speak once more, but nothing came out. His mouth and tongue were moving fine, just his vocal chords were continuing to fail him. He eventually shut his mouth after some time as he let Lily fuss over his hand. She wasn't tearing up or sniffling like the first time.
Lightly, Lily took a shard of glass between her fingers and pulled. It slid out neatly, but the cut started to bleed again. Lily made a little "aah!" noise and looked around frantically for something to stop it with. Something, something, anything-she pulled the light blue ribbon from her hair and wrapped it around his hand, staining it with his blood.
"There!" She said happy, then pulled out another shard.
Lather, rinse, and repeat.
He seethed a little at the glass being pulled out and the same for the next shards. He looked down at his hand, frowning. Why hadn't it healed right away?
"L...Li..." You can say it. Since you've screamed it so many times in your nightmares. "...ly..."
Lily blinks and looks up at him curiously. Her expression quickly turns apologetic. "D-does it hurt? I'm sorry!"
"'It doesn't hurt anymore', does it?~"
He shook his head a little. It only hurt a little, but the pain would disappear in a few... right?
"Okay..." Her movements slowed down considerably, so she didn't hurt him. Lily knew what she was capable of-mostly-and she didn't want to hurt him any more than she had to.
He probably didn't want to hurt her ever again, too.
Right?
She finished up and tied her ribbon around his hand in a bow. "There!"
He blinked those crimson eyes at the sight of the bow. "..Th...anks..."
Lily smiled and held his hand tightly. She could feel his blood seeping through her bow, and it was sticky and gross, but that was okay. It was Brother!
"Let's do something! Are you hungry?"
"...What?" Congrats, you just formed one word! "...Uh... no. I'm... fine."
When was the last time he ate? He couldn't remember. Things were fine, they weren't back in the labs. He didn't need to kill or prove his worth.
"Are you sure? Do you like cupcakes?" Her smile grew. "There are a ton of them at the Rotisserie!"
"I don't have... sweets that often." A very rare occurence, not as rare as a decent meal. "...I'm fine."
"Oh."
She looked down, around, then back to him. "Hey, Brother?"
Oh yeah, he was once called that. "...What?"
Lily paused, just staring at him. "... Do you think I'm real?"
He looked away, thinking. She was standing infront of him, grasping his hand. It wasn't his sleep deprived mind playing tricks. The conclusion?
After some silence, "...Yes."
It was difficult to say but, it was out now.
He did. He thought-he did. She's real. She-she smiled up at him, clasping his hand between both of hers tightly. "Thanks, Brother."
He gave a small nod, unable to give a squeeze of his hand back. Now, since that was over, could they not be standing in the hallway like dorks? But then again, that was Lily's job~
"...Do you know why I'm not able to heal?"
Oh! She'll take him to see Angelica! Of course! She squeezes his hand again and turns to lead him towards the elevator.
"Umm... Sort of. I don't heal so fast, either. I think it 'cause of the Emiss Ellygand."
"...You mean MS Elegante." He was dragged about. "...Just great."
She paused and stopped in her stride. Blinking, she looks up at him. "MS Elegante? Is that it?"
"Yes." He comfirmed for her. "Where are we going...?"
He had no idea where she was leading him in this place. It sucked being in a foreign place.
"Oh. We're going to deck six, where the bees are!" Lily informed him, continuing to the elevator. She pressed in the "down" button and looked up at him with a "don't you know?" look. "They're really big and friendly!"
"...Bees?" Cue the wtf face before his palmed with his good hand. "Why do I have a feeling this is a messed up experiment?"
"It's not an experiment! The bees are nice!"
With a ding!, the elevator slides open. Lily pulled him inside and mashed the button for deck 6 a little harder than necessary. "I gave one a ribbon and named her Angelica, after mother!"
"....After her?!" He tensed at the mention of her name, a mix of disgust and anger.
"... Yeah. I couldn't think of anything else." She smiled shakily while the elevator doors slid shut with a quiet hiss in front of them. "But she likes her name!"
She had a point there with her limited knowledge. "...I see." Weirded out now, thanks.
Smile. Lily suddenly felt really awkward, standing there with her brother-her brother who had, apparently, killed her in a rage.
But he would never do that.
She squeezed his hand lightly and looked up at him, her expression a little shy. "... I missed you."
"...I know." He murmured, his focus on the floor.
He had missed her as well, but then again, if he hadn't done such... He would never have met Bishop, Badou or Nill. ... He would never admit that to the mutt. It was wrong to stroke that sadistic creature's ego even more.
Silence. The elevator ding!ed, and the doors slid open. Lily didn't get out yet. Instead, she looked up to him. "Are you okay?"
"Yeah, I'm fine." But he wasn't. "...Is this the right floor?"
"Just put on the same expression you give everyone, Haine. You say things are fine but you're wounded on the inside like a weak animal!"
There was a grunt at the cackling from the inside.
"H-huh? Yeah." She stepped out. The doors had begun to shut, but they slid back as she passed by. Once the doors slid shut behind them, Lily turned to Haine and looked up at him, making eye contact. "Brother, d-did you like-did you like killing me?"
Direct. Lily had spent most of their time in the elevator readying herself to ask this.
"....I wasn't myself when it happened." He admitted, stepping a head. Sure, he had no clue where he was going, but he didn't want to face the 'ghost' of his past. "I don't know if I deserve your forgiveness or not."
She didn't know what to say to that. Of course she forgave him, but-well. Did she really? The voice in the back of her head... the DOG didn't. Did she?
Do I?
Well. Lily squeezed his hand.
"Let's go see the bees, okay?"
