Canary in a theater

Aug 13, 2009 16:10

Characters: Russ (oneeveryminute) and TP!Link (farmhandhero) [closed, but ask if you want in]
Location: Spectacular^2 Theater
Date: Present
Rating: PG-13 for violence

Russ's death in Carnival had been an eye opener.  He was a grifter by nature, never quite smart enough to be a long con man or a roper, entirely too cowardly to risk so much, even for all that gain.  Short cons were low gain, low risk; a slap on the wrist and a couple of days in the nick if he didn't watch his back.  But long cons?  You'd go down for life.

Except here, life meant nothing.  Murder got a couple of days in the lockup, death got you a return ticket back to your room.  For once in his life, there was absolutely no risk.  No gain in short cons, but no loss in long cons.  The perfect set up.

Leaning back against the doors of the Spectacular Spectacular, he nudged the jimmied lock with the toe of his boot.  It was surprisingly easy to pry open, considering what he'd heard about what was inside.  Cigarette tucked between his lips, he waited calmly for a mark.
