Well, the food at the buffet was a no-go. It smelled horrible and tasted even worse, apparently the captain's punishment for their little field trip into the crew-only decks. So with that out of the question, Link headed to the Kuma-ko with his stomach growling loudly. Maybe the food there would be better?
When he walked in, he saw that it wasn't empty like it normally is. Rather, there was a girl here, and a girl he didn't know at that. That was odd. Clearing his throat to announce his presence, he walks over to the bar and glances at her hesitantly before finally asking, "Is it okay if I sit here...?"
Unagi sushi lifted halfway to her mouth, Ema blinked as an... elf spoke to her. Bears, now elves. Maybe logic really wouldn't help her in this place. At his question, she shrugged. "Sure," she replied, finally eating her first bite of sushi. Aaaah, that was it. It had been far too long since she had sushi. Washing it down with her sake, she returned her focus to her food.
Link gave her a polite nod, and sat down at the bar. He normally ordered simple chirashi-zushi, the bowl being easier to eat from with chopsticks than smaller pieces.
After raising his hand to get a bear's attention and asking for his usual, he went silent for another moment and finally glanced back at her.
"Um... so, are you a new passenger? I haven't seen you before."
"Just arrived," she replied, "I'm guessing you've been on board a while; do they kidnap all their passengers, or am I just lucky?" Ema had moved on to shrimp sushi, working her way clockwise around the sushi-laden plate.
"All of them, as far as we can tell... the crew's different, apparently." He watched her eat, noting the skillful use of the chopsticks. She didn't look Japanese, though, at least not the way the Major and Akagi did.
"I'm sure people have already told you the basics, though?" He was happy to explain if they hadn't. Just that moment, the bear placed his bowl of rice and sashimi in front of him, though. So, holding that thought, he pours himself some soy sauce and reaches for a pair of wooden chopsticks.
"That basically we can't leave and we're supposedly sailing for a place that doesn't exist? Yeah." She gave a little smirk at that, sipping her sake again. "I'm Ema," she replied, "Pleased to meet you."
"Hah, yeah, basically." He smiled at her earnestly as he mixed the contents of the bowl together. Well, she seemed pretty smart. And she's cute. Coming here wasn't too bad of an idea. Turning back to his bowl, picked it up in his right hand and began to dig in. Chopsticks were much easier to eat with when you just used them to shovel food into your mouth from a bowl.
...and it still smells and tastes awful. He made a face for a moment before deciding to just endure it and eat already. Link was starving.
After chewing for a bit, he looked back to her with his eyebrows raised. "Uh, so, are you from 'Japan' too? You're good at using chopsticks, but 'Ema' doesn't sound very Japanese. At least what I know about it..."
Ema blinked a bit at his reaction; the soup smelled fine to her. Maybe it was just him. Mentally shrugging it off, she focused on his question, her brows raising. Finally, she chuckles again.
"No," she replies, "I'm from America. California, to be exact. I was in Japan for a few weeks, but that was it." Half the plate was gone. Though she wasn't pigging out, Ema had a knack for finishing meals quickly.
"Oh... America, right." Not that he had any idea what or where that was. But it must be from the same world the Major and Akagi were from... sort of. Like most conflicts with everyone's worlds, it was best not to think about it too much, so he lets it drop.
Forcing down some more of the food, he went quiet, wondering what else to ask. Erk... awkward, a little...
"What about you?" Ema asked, "Where are you from?" She munched on her food as she looked at his ears, wondering how real they were. You couldn't blame her. She'd seen big ears, certainly, but not... long. Elven, even. It was interesting, to her.
He saw her looking at his ears, much like a lot of the other Gerudo-eared passengers did when first meeting him. It didn't bother him, he liked having a reason to talk about his home.
"I'm from Hyrule," he explained between mouthfuls. "Or, well, I'm from the forest... but it's right next to Hyrule, and I'm Hylian, so I guess you can say I'm from Hyrule too." He gave a sheepish shrug. Ack, he's rambling. "I guess it's a little complicated."
"Hylian," she murmured, "So, not an elf, then?" Ema wasn't trying to be rude. It was the ears, really. Ema finished off the bite of sushi in her chopsticks, then pulled a small notebook out her her pocket and clicking a pen open. "Note: While elves may exist, not all that look like such are." Nodding in satisfaction, Ema flipped the book closed and put both pen and paper away, returning to her almost empty platter.
"Well, some people on board call me an 'elf', but I'd never heard of that before I came here..."
He trailed off as he watched her pull out the little notepad. So she takes notes on things? He has a sudden urge to look through the pages out of curiosity. And her observation makes him chuckle.
"I guess I could just as easily say," he said, "that not all people with Gerudo ears are Gerudos... so maybe I shouldn't call them Gerudo ears at all, I wonder?"
"It's perfectly fine to call me a Gerudo if that's what you're used to," she said, "I don't mind. However, others on this ship might not be so kind. Just be careful." She gave a small smile as she finished off her sushi, pushing the empty plate towards the bears as she poured herself a second cup of sake.

Yes, Ema, an elf is asking you about Japan.
