Harley is used to dragging herself around after getting her own ass kicked. She's sadly just as used to dragging around others after they've gotten their asses kicked. Even so, the added weight of the armor isn't helping and Maia is hardly able to keep herself upright.

She listens intently as Maia explains what it is they're going for instead of getting her to a medic of some kind. Her brows rise as she learns of the work being done on Anna, but she hardly finds this the appropriate time or place to inquire as to what was being tested or done to her friend. She knows next to nothing about Dark Eco, besides what she's picked up over the communicators. Something for another day, perhaps.

They reach the ninth floor and the elevator pings and the door slides open. Harley shifts, grunting an apology at jostling Maia more than needed. "We'll get 'em, Mai. Don't ya worry about it .."

There was a certain camaraderie in that Maia was sharing this stuff with her, and Harley rather doubted she'd have normally done so. It would give them more to talk about once they got her up and moving again. She chose to ignore the rather obvious trail of blood the two of them were leaving on the way to the library.

And then there's a name and they particular way Maia says it. She feels a fury rise like bile and speaks through clenched teeth as they near their goal. "Phoenix? That who did this?" C'mon Maia .. give the girl an affirmative. She'll make all your troubles go away after she got you to the medical bay.

Maia still isn't used to being vulnerable or helpless, and she probably never will be. The only person she even had to lean on was Gol, and he relied on her just as much as she relied on him. What they had was not weakness, it was a mutual want to take care of one another.

Maia knows she's leaving a trail of blood in their wake, but so long as she gets to her notes, then she could care less about however much she ends up bleeding. If Phoenix took her notes...oh, Maia is going to find him, kill him, wait for him to come back, and kill him again. If not for that miserable bastard, Maia would be able to continue her work on Anna until there were even more changes and progressions in the other woman's condition. This was a learning process, and Phoenix had gone and ruined it all.

She can vaguely make out what Harley's saying to her. As it is, Maia is having a more and more difficult time paying attention to her surroundings, and her vision keeps on slipping in and out of focus.

"Phoenix...intruded on Anna and I. Fought...shot me." Even if Maia were in a condition to speak coherently, she would leave out the part where she deliberately taunted Phoenix into shooting her. Not that it matters. Not really.

They've just reached the doorway of the library as Maia affirms that it was Phoenix that shot her. Harley feels a knot of something cold and rather scary settle into the pit of her stomach and she shoves it down, willing it away for now. "We'll take care'a him, Maia .. don't even worry yer pretty head about it."

The stumble across the threshold and Harley grunts audibly, shifting her weight to support Maia better. Her foot slips on some of the blood and the pair nearly go down, but she wrenches herself in the opposite direction and regains her footing, ignoring the flare of pain in her knee. "Just .. just keep that thing pressed tight, 'kay?"

She makes her way into the library proper, glancing this way and that, but really has no idea where to start looking without taking far too long. "Mai .. Maia, where were ya?"

at this point it's safe to say that Torn already came in, grabbed Maia's notes, and left with 'em. solittleeffort November 15 2010, 00:44:17 UTC
Maia lets out another pained grunt as Harley slips - regardless of Harley regaining her footing, being pulled back up like that only hurts even more. She'll listen to Harley and keep on holding her shirt to her abdomen, but it's difficult for Maia to keep constant pressure when she keeps on feeling weaker.

"Set me down..."

Maia is tired, and right now all she wants to do is close her eyes and sleep the pain away. Sleep would be very good, right now.

She feebly tries to lift one of her arms to gesture to one of the nearby tables, "Nn...my notes...they should be here."

Harley does as she's bid, setting Maia down so she's leaning against one of the bookshelves. At the present time, she could give two shits if she's getting blood all over the carpet and books. She darts her gaze back to Maia and sees her unfocused eyes. She looks in the direction she is gesturing and nods.

"Fine .. I'll look, but stay awake, ya hear me?"

She moves quickly, searching the area Maia pointed out, scouring the tables. However, even after a more in depth look, there is nothing to be found. She feels her stomach lurch painfully, calling to Maia as she knocks things around.

"MAI .. Mai, there ain't nothin' here .. no notes .. nothin'!" She looks over to where Maia is leaning, her expression sick. "Whatever ya left .. it's gone .."

Maia just continues to bleed out as Harley searched for her notes. As each second passes, she grows to feel even tireder, weaker, and colder than before. She tries to pay attention to what her companion says or does, but she Maia just can't bring herself to focus. Maia just wants to rest

Her eyes wander upward to look at Harley as she speaks...something about her notes, but she's not really listening. Although seeing as the other woman isn't holding them, it's safe to assume that they were stolen.

Maia opens her mouth to try and say something, but instead, her mind leaves her and her body goes limp. Harley will have to wait another 24 hours before she can talk to Maia, again.

Harley feels her stomach drop when there is no response from Maia. The sinking feeling increases as the silence seems to lengthen. "Maia?" She turns to where she left her friend and is moving before she can finish the thought.

"MAIA!" She stumbles to a halt, dropping to her knees next to the precusor's prone body. Harley could tell immediately what was wrong, but it wasn't something her mind could accept just yet. She grips the woman's shoulder, giving her a small shake, eyes a bit wider than normal.

"Mai?" Her voice is soft and just a bit plaintive as she reaches a finger to her neck, pressing for a pulse. She's not breathing .. She's not breathing and Harley can't find a pulse. There is blood everywhere, soaking through the shirt and pooled onto the ground beneath her.

It couldn't be good to lose that much blood, could it? No, it definitely couldn't be good to lose that much .. "Hah .. some joke, huh, Maia?" she says, laughing in a manner that doesn't sound altogether. "Yer just a big joker .. c'mon, toots .. ya gotta get up now .. We can take ya ta the med bay and get ya patched up."

Only there would be no patching her up and the part of her that gets that kind of snaps. She looks sad as she begins to remove Maia's armor pieces, paying no mind to the blood that gets everywhere as she moves around the warm, limp limbs. It's only a few minutes worth of work, but it feels like it takes so much longer. She finally makes to carefully remove the helmet from her head, cushioning her head gently as she sets it aside.

She'd learned, over her time here, that if you removed personal belongings that they wouldn't vanish at the time of death. She's got the bloody pile to one side, but leaves her otherwise dressed, unwilling to leave her naked until she disappears.

She then sits back on her knees, expression blank save for a cold, unbalanced fury that begins to simmer in her eyes as she watches Maia's body slowly begin to fade before her. Harley moves to gather the armor pieces only after Maia has faded from sight entirely, struggling with the assorted items and paying no mind to the blood that gets everywhere.

Once it is all in hand, she begins to make her way back to her room, a smile on her face that is anything but comforting.

Harley has become well and truly unhinged.
