It's unfair to say that Damas is unaware of what goes on on the ship. He's not unaware, he's just... somewhat apathetic. It's not to say he doesn't listen, it can be somewhat entertaining at the best of times, however: he catches snippets of what's important.
He knows something is wrong with his son, but it's rather like pulling teeth from a sleeping metalhead to find out what exactly it is. Even if he can find out, he barely has a plan for what will come after.
The old Spargan king knocks on the door across the hall with little in mind other than seeing if Jak is alive and well.
Or, at the very least, alive.
