Whump! This was not the first time Phoenix had been to this deck, so the abrupt shift in gravity was not entirely unexpected. That did not make it any less uncomfortable when the gravity shifted and dumped him on a wall. Shaking his head with a grimace, Phoenix picked himself up off the new floor.
"Someday," he muttered, "I would like for this ship to make sense."
Somewhere in the distance, a chicken clucked in frustration. Phoenix ignored it, though he could understand the sentiment. Briskly, he made his way to the nearest door, which gravity dictated was in the floor, wanting to get to it before the gravity changed again. He needn't have bothered; the door was fake. Frowning, Phoenix moved on. The next door was fake as well. Shift. And now he was on the ceiling.
The last time he had been on this deck, it had been as part of a search party looking for the source of the pleas for help that had been echoing throughout the ship. That search had ended when another party had discovered the girl, Jennifer, in the Spectacular Spectacular theater, and so Phoenix never had seen all that this deck offered. Actually, he doubted very many people had explored this deck to any extent. The irritation from the changes in gravity would discourage the casual passenger from staying for very long.
That was exactly why Phoenix was here right now. Anything that keeps people from wanting to investigate implies that there is something there and that it is significant.
His hand was on the doorknob of another door when the gravity changed again, jerking his body to the left - down - so that he was dangling from the ceiling-wall. "Damn!" With a growl, Phoenix let go of the knob and dropped down, flexing his knees to absorb some of the shock of the fall. He was on the opposite wall now, standing directly on top of another door, which he wasted no time in opening.
And open it did.
As far as he knew, he was the only passenger on the deck.
