So. Very. Annoyed.

Today I bought a set of headphones with a microphone attached. I plugged them into my desktop when I got home. The headphones are awesome. The mic doesn't work. Apparently I need an adapter for it to work with a Mac. And there's me thinking something as basic as a microphone port would be vaguely universal. My laptop doesn't even have a microphone ( Read more... )

Wait... desktop? Do you have a Mac desktop too? AND IT DOESN'T HAVE AN AUDIO INPUT EITHER???
What was Apple THINKING???

Actually... I'm not sure what you're talking about now that I realise this is about a desktop computer. However, I am painfully aware of the lack of audio input on an iBook. :P

Yeah, I'm talking about both the desktop AND the iBook. The desktop has what I assume is an input port, but having looked up the logitech site it says something about the port not being powered in a Mac, where it is powered in a PC.

NOWHERE on the packaging of the headset, though, does it say anything about system requirements or the fact that it will only work on a mac with an adapter. Update later - I'm going back to the shop at lunchtime. *sigh*

Yeah, I already spent $35 on the headset - I dunno that I'm prepared to spend another $69, as appealing as the thing is. :(

I'm sure you can get much the same thing for a better price than that. That one is just claiming to be good for recording audio and stuff - if you just want it for talking rather than creating music, then I'm sure Dick Smith or somewhere would have something more reasonable.

I hope so. But hey, look at this! I can do a DIY battery change with my old, battered iPod!!!

Hmmm. I wonder if that's any good. And I also wonder if that site is reliable. (If you end up ordering anything from them, let me know, because I'll be getting the iMic, possibly, at some point. Unless I go for something a little fancier, although that'd be fairly redundant given that it's for an iBook...).

Sure - just a thought at the moment, but it looks like my only option short of paying waaaay too much money for a service or replacement.
I went back to the store last night, and they were happy to do a partial replacement for the headset, despite my having opened it already. It meant I spent a total of $59 on a usb headset when the other one should have been suficient, but it's a lot less than I'd feared.

$59 sounds okay - not that I'd know - but it's certainly cheaper than getting headphones AND a USB adaptor separately. *thumbs up*
