Character Name: Jolt
Character Series: Transformers (live-action movie universe)
Character Age: Probably really old by human standards, but fairly young by Cybertronian standards. I peg him somewhere in whatever the Cybertronian equivalent of his 20's is.
Background: His TFWiki article is
here. As you can see, there's not much there- what with him having maybe two minutes of screentime and no dialogue to speak of- so allow me to expand!
While the early generations of Autobots were scientists and guards at best, and had to learn to be soldiers, the later generations were built for war. Fighting was their function. That's why they were there. For his own part, Jolt might not be as sleek as some of the other mechs of his generation - like, say, Sideswipe. Jolt's stockier, more durable - but just as competent a warrior. A melee fighter, he wields a pair of whips.
Jolt had little contact with the Autobot leader, Optimus Prime, and those closest to him. (Though he followed their exploits as closely as he could.) He was assigned to a small espionage unit where his close-quarters combat style and skills were appreciated- but his impulsive and chaotic tendencies were not. While his fellow soldiers seemed to like him, his commanders were less-than-pleased with his inability to think before he acts. In fact, it was Jolt's own recklessness that caused him to be separated from his unit in pursuit of a Decepticon scout and lead right into an ambush. Even for Jolt, who was used to taking on groups of Decepticons at a time, the odds were too greatly stacked against him.
It quickly became apparent to the Decepticons that, while Jolt had a lot of fight in him, he really wasn't anyone of importance- just a grunt. The group's muscle rather than brain, and it had been information they were after. They became bored of their toy and left Jolt stranded on a desolate little planet to fend for himself. He tried to contact his commanders, his friends, anyone, but no one showed up rescue him. Either they couldn't or wouldn't- and, to Jolt, the first option was definitely a scary one, but the second one was terrifying. He started blaring a distress signal, loud and clear, for anyone to hear. Another stupid move, but this one paid off, because a duo of Decepticons answered the call- and brought with them the means for Jolt to finally get off of that planet.
Once freed from his little exile, he was little aimless to start. Jolt toyed with the idea of trying to find his old comrades, but when Optimus Prime's rallying call reached him, he knew that Earth was where he had to go. There was nothing left for him out there- he'd been abandoned by his comrades, and even now it's not something he talks about for fear that it would reflect badly on him as a soldier, not to mention as a mech as a whole. (Though, he still doesn't know why they left him. Perhaps he was too much of a liability? Maybe they thought he was dead? And he'll never really know.)
Eager to reach the homing beacon placed by Optimus Prime as a gathering point for new Autobots, Jolt rushed to Earth- without thinking first, as usual, and nearly collided with a Dish Network satellite like a winner. The near-collision caused him to drastically alter his course and he crash-landed somewhere in the Rocky Mountains.
The sheer amount of plant life there gave the young Autobot pause for the first time in a long time. He knew the basics of Earth and it's people, but the trees. They were something else. Jolt was quickly taken with his surroundings, and spent a good week just lost in the woods. (Which prompted some interesting tabloid articles and theories amongst the locals about Bigfoot.) Jolt promised himself that once he made contact with the others to learn as much as he could about Earth's plants- and because of that, he has quite the arsenal of tree and flower facts stored in his processor. Not that anyone ever needs to know about this dorky little hobby of his. Because they don't. Ever. He was eventually located and brought to Diego Garcia with the soldiers of NEST and the rest of the Autobots- and boy did he get a lecture about stomping around through the mountains.
But it was his love for nature that prompted his decision to take an electric vehicle as an alternate mode- eventually he selected a blue
Chevrolet Volt. The electrical abilities that came with such an alt were a nice bonus, and an even nicer cover for the fact that Jolt was trying to be environmentally friendly. It wasn't long before the Autobot medic, Ratchet, approached Jolt about the applications electricity could have in medicine as well. When the schedule of training and hunting Decepticons allowed, the two began working together- experimenting with electromagnetism and other such things for use in field medicine.
And then Megatron came back from the dead and stuff started happening and, well,
I'll just leave this here.
Jolt, unfortunately, won't have made it through all of the events of the film before waking up in Mayfield. The last thing he remembers is working to attach Jetfire's parts to Optimus- he doesn't even know if it worked, because there was a flash of light as he completed the procedure... and then he woke up in a strange house and in a human body to boot.
Personality: As if I haven't said this enough already: Jolt does not think before he acts. He's reckless, impulsive, and always out for the next big adventure. If there's trouble, you can be sure that Jolt started it- and if he didn't, he's right smack in the middle of it anyway. He likes fighting Decepticons, and he's good at it, and he just really doesn't take into account the odds before diving in. Fortunately for him, he has the skills to come out on top most of the time.
Now, that's not to say he's cocky. He's not, really. He'll provoke and taunt his enemies, certainly, but that's more of a ruse to get them inside the range of his weapons. He'll even joke with and taunt his fellow Autobots- but no, he's not outright cocky. Merely confident in his abilities, and rightfully so. You have to be skilled to be a melee fighter in a war that relies heavily on projectile weapons.
For all of his recklessness, Jolt has quite a big heart. He cares about his friends and comrades, and even the planet they're on, far more than he'd ever admit. He strives for approval, especially from the older warriors, Ratchet and Ironhide (Ironhide especially. Jolt kind of fanbots him a little), and tries his very best to be friendly towards them. He still sort of thinks they just tolerate him- he's basically a kid compared to them- and was kind of surprised to discover they actually get along without Jolt having to put forth too much effort. Regardless, his need to be liked makes him hesitant to reveal his feelings or thoughts on most things, for fear of... well, not being liked. These are his friends and fellow warriors, and their opinions mean a lot to him. Having a big heart also means he has a tendency to let things get to him- possibly more than they should. His comrades' abandonment still weighs heavy on his spark, but it's not something he'd ever share with anyone because he wants neither ridicule nor pity.
All-in-all, he's easy to get along with. Don't give him a reason to hate you, and he won't. Engage in civilized conversation, and you can expect the same. (Unless you're a Decepticon, then that option's out.) He's not hard to become friends with... being his friend, however? Well, just don't be surprised if you find yourself suddenly being dragged into a ridiculous situation because Jolt couldn't keep his impulses in check.
Abilities: Aside from the fact that he's a giant alien robot who can turn into a car? Having an electric car for an altmode granted Jolt the ability to generate electricity- this has applications in both fighting and in healing. Usually he utilizes his electrical abilities in battle- powering his whips, or firing off bolts of electricity at enemies. But, and this is in no small part thanks to Ratchet's own curiosity, he can also use electromagnetism to transplant parts from one Cybertronian to another. He's also capable of sustaining a comrade who is near death for a short time by pumping electricity into them.
