He didn’t need anyone. Or at least, Prussia had told him that for a long, long time. Companionship, allies, lovers - he didn’t need any of it.
The thought rolled through his mind on a seemingly endless loop as he sat there, crouched carefully in the large white box with its thick, black ribbon. Every few seconds, he would lift his head and one hand, tapping the lid up just enough to peer into the warmly lit room, watching the others shuffle in and out of the decorated room quickly. He listened as they trekked past and dumped their gifts, peeked out every now and again to eye the tags that held cheerful messages and were addressed to everyone but him. Not that he cared, he would pause in his infinite mantra to think every so often.
The only reason he was still sitting in this box - his awesome, awesome box addressed to the one and only - was sitting across the room. When the others would pop in and out, he’d watch them pass her or stop to say something or another. Not that he was worried they were telling her bad things about him - he just had nothing better to do. Really. Regardless, he was waiting for her to leave. She’d been there for hours, now, as far as he could remember. She’d appeared a few moments after he had snuck into the room in his oh-so-clever disguise to plant his gift that was obviously not for her. If anyone looked close enough, however, they would see that was hardly the case.
The small, surprisingly neatly wrapped gift that was clutched loosely in one hand and Prussia didn’t seem inclined to drop it any time soon. Again, he lifted his head to peek out of the box, cursing faintly to himself as West inched past to set a few gifts under the tree as well. Once he was sure the familiar looming presence of his baby brother was gone, he paused to peek out, eyeing the tags on the gifts. Italy and Japan, he noted, wrinkling his nose in disapproval. There was another beside the two that he had been prepared to investigate when she headed over, a few gifts in her arms that she nestled easily under the tree beside West’s.
He was curious to who they were for, he decided, watching as she stood and turned away - calling something to West before heading after him. Prussia perked at that, reaching to put his hands on the side of the box to stand, feet moving quickly through the small opening he had made in the bottom to carry the large disguise closer to her gift. He froze and dropped back down silently as her and West conversation would pause - listening to their murmurs of curiosity about the large present. He cursed under his breath, waiting for them to continue before peeking from beneath the lid once more, tipping the box forward to eye the nametags. West’s other gift, he observed, was addressed - ‘To Prus- the Idiot’. A part of him was warmed at the thought before he shook it off, shifting his attention to the other presents beside it - to the ones she had clearly taken the time to get.
His face twisted in disapproval as he observed that many of them were addressed to the other girls and the ever irritating Specs - even one for that bastard Russia! A sharp curse left him at that and he hurriedly lifted his hand to slap it over his mouth as West and the female stopped to glance over once more, voicing their curiosity louder still. This was bad, he decided, panic swelling as he fought the urge to burst from the box and shout about something or another - anything to keep them from opening the box and discovering that he had been hiding in this box like he actually cared what went on around the large decorated tree. But as their conversation picked up once more, he made a swift decision.
He had to make a break for it.
The motion was quick as he stood, bursting from the lid and dropping the box in his hand with the mess of gifts already under the tree before bolting - stumbling out of the box as he tore out of the room as fast as he could, a mere blur of white and blue to West and his companion. “What was that about,” she sighed, arching a brow and moving towards the fallen box with West in tow.
The blond only shook his head, lifting his hand to press it to his face. “Who knows,” he managed faintly, sighing and lowering his hand to glance towards the tree as if to check to see if Prussia had taken anything before pausing at the delicately wrapped parcel that had fallen next to one of the many the girl had wrapped. ‘To Hungary’, it read, with no from. He arched a brow, bending to lift it and turn it over in his hands, taking note of the yellow bird sticker stuck on the bottom.
“What’s that?” She wondered, shifting to peer around his arm at the box in his hand. He shook his head quickly, moving to settle it down among the gifts she had wrapped before straightening and placing a hand on her shoulder to steer her away.
“Nothing important, Hungary.”
She fixed him with a strange look before deciding he was probably right, eyes shifting to the tree in time to see the gift nestled beside one with a tag that read ‘To Prussia, From Hungary’.
