Thought implies distinction between a thinker and an object of thought. There is an essential division between the contemplator and the contemplated ( Read more... )

Hmph. You have to accept the postulate, first.

[Motoko plays with the ends of his hair, winding the strands around her fingers. She's amused that he's the one with the existential angst this time.]

[Batou sets the communicator back down and reaches to stroke his broad hand down the outside of her thigh. The synthetic skin is warm, soft, and there's nothing robotic in his appreciation of it.]

It's a thought exercise.

[Okay, she'll play.]

If human self-awareness is the crack in the mirror, then robots, lacking ghosts, don't partake of that imperfection.

[Motoko rolls away slightly and props her head up on her hand so that she can look at his face. Not that she minds murmuring into the curve of his neck, but she has the feeling that would result in the discussion being cut short in favor of other activities.]

So you're s supremecist, then.

[Batou's low, baritone voice is amused, and when the Major pulls away he follows. His long, snow-white hair falls around his face as Batou settles between the Major's legs and starts to hoist them up around his waist.

Enough philosophy now.

He's got better ideas than the ones of dusty old Plotinus.]

[Discussion derailed anyway. Oh, how terrible. She pulls his face to hers.]

// There are advantages to self-awareness. //

[Like the thrill of anticipation from being able to conceptualize the future. The very immediate future, in this case.]

[Thom blinks and turns around in a couple circles. This wasn't where he was. He was in a bath.

This means he's soaking wet. Do you guys like wet dogs?]

What happened?

[Batou is just about to get to the main, highly intellectual thrust of his and the Major's philosophical discussion when something heavy falls on his back, then vanishes.

Immediately he drops into gunfight mode and the world slows as he grabs the Major and rolls to the side, protecting her with his own body. Batou is incredibly heavy, so he simply pulverizes the empty beer cans and an unfortunate desk chair in his way. Batou stops with the Major pressed into the corner of the wall and floor, and he looks to see their newest attacker.

Ace and a talking dog-thing.

They don't look hostile.

They look confused. Batou, still completely naked, slowly begins to get off the Major--but not before he snags a pair of his pants from the floor and hands them to her.]

What do you think you're doing? Get out. Now.

[She trusts Batou's instincts and doesn't resist when he engages in a sudden change of plans. It only takes a moment of combat perception to realize there's no threat here...well, from the newcomers, anyway. She's feeling pretty hostile.

Aside from the fact that she would look beyond ridiculous in Batou's pants, she sees no reason why she has to get dressed when they're the ones interrupting, so she tosses the trousers back at Batou.]

Ace.

[That is not the voice of someone glad to see you, Ace.]

[The naked man and woman's voices mean business. Thom's ears go flat and his tail tucks between his legs as he cringes apologetically.]

I'm sorry! I didn' mean to do anything - I don't know what I did! I was just - in the bathroom!

[He shivers, getting cold, then - instinctively, and not at all deliberately - shakes. WATER EVERYWHERE.]

Take your ugly babies and get out, Ace.

[Voice match analysis confirmed.]

You, too, Thom. Out. Get out.

[Batou's furious, and given the Major's memories of Ace he knows the man is tricky and can teleport. He doesn't believe a word of Ace's proclomations of innocence.]

[Why is there a wet dog? Oh, godammit, it's shaking off.

The Major trusts Ace not to be actively suicidal, so she's not convinced it's his fault, but she also has no problem with the orders Batou's giving.

She just folds her arms and glares.]

[Thom takes orders very well, especially from someone as authoritative as Batou. He slinks to the door and gets up on his back paws to reach the handle.

The baby that resembles a canine-cyborg hybrid starts fussing...]

[They're not leaving. Batou scowls at Thom, who's gotten him wet, and then at Ace. Ace had better keep his eyes where they belong, or Batou will relieve Ace of the burden of eyeballs in his skull.

He doesn't care if Thom sees her naked.

Thom is a dog.

Batou waves his hand at Thom who's trying to leave when the baby starts to fuss.]

No, don't go.

[Batou walks over to examine the infants.]

... they're cyborg infants.
