It could be possible he's doing it out of the goodness of his heart, but I seriously doubt that. So either he's getting paid to do it, somehow, or he's just... off his gourd. [Which he hasn't discounted either.]

The goal would, then, to find out what that info or assumptions are, but I doubt that asking nicely is going to get us the answers.
