Cargo ships, or freighters, are ships that carry freight from one port to another and are usually designed specifically for that task. Many of the larger cargo ships such as Panamax, Handymax and Aframax are equipped with loading cranes specifically for the purpose of moving goods from dock to their holds. In addition, the modern shipping business is divided roughly into two classes: liner and tramp-tanker business.
It is unlcear if the MS Elegante is liner or tramp-tanker, the difference being that a tramp tanker operates on a case-by-case contract to carry freight from one specific port to another, and a liner operates more like a government postal service. To illustrate, imagine that all our worlds are post boxes, and Captain Redd and his crew are mail carriers who pick us up from the drop box and tote us all along on their circuit before terminating at the Golden Shore and then beginning again.
In other words: is the MS Elegante one of many ships that collect 'survivors' on a fore-ordained route, or is it carrying out the directives of a client. Is Captain Redd a mercenary who accepts contracts to take us to the Golden Shore on a case by case basis, or is this a regular, sanctioned stop? In either case, that leaves the question of sanctioned by who? and hired by who?
The haunting question is, of course, why?
Or perhaps I'm merely asking the wrong questions.
thinking,
more machine than man,

more man than machine,
help me i am in hell,
what hath redd wrought?,
finding a pattern?
