Note 1: Hearing this song for the first time a few months ago, I immediately associated it with TOS and Uhura in particular. I thought about the sort of breakdown the lyrics could refer to -- an emotional breakdown, certainly, but also a breakdown in operations, a breakdown in communications. Clearly, as the Enterprise's communications officer, Uhura's seen it all.
I also really wanted to make a vid that focused on Uhura because she is such a total BAMF, and I've been tired of hearing some people say that her character is no more than 'a glorified switchboard operator' or 'receptionist in space.' Hopefully this vid challenges those viewpoints and demonstrates how instrumental Uhura is to the Enterprise and to the show. Because she's been in the thick of it with the boys and she is thoroughly awesome, okay, and not just for being a black, female, 'non-maid' character on tv in the '60s.
I have to confess -- this endeavor was made so much easier by Nichelle Nichols' face. Goddamn that is one gorgeous woman. *__*
Note 2: Many thanks to
stormyskies on
ontd_startrek whose episode uploads I used to make this video. I know it's bad bad bad to not rip from dvd source, but I don't have the monies, sorry.
Lyrics:
Scratch the ice
Let the telephone ring
Sense of time is a powerful thing
And we love to laugh
Love to cry
Half alive
We love to
Go slow when we're dancing for rain
Dry skin flakes where there's ice in the vein
And we love to cry
Half alive
Is this the start of the breakdown?
Scratch the earth
Dig the burial ground
Sense of time would be easily found
And ten out of ten
For the ones who defend
Pretend too
Breakdown is a final demand
We stand firm with our head in our hands
As we love to cry
Half alive
Is this the start of the breakdown?
I can't understand you
Is this the start of the breakdown?
I can't understand you
Is this the start of the breakdown?
Break, break down
Break, break
Is this the start of the breakdown?
I can't understand you
Is this the start of the breakdown?
I can't understand you
