One day I'll make my book post, but it's sooo much work boo.
I went to the exhibit on Mata Hari at the Fries Museum, it was GREAT.
Frysia has really gone for her as their national hero after the publication of the secret files and it delights me. They named an AQUADUCT after her lol.
Her life story is so tragic though, with an abusive husband, a child dead of syphilis and being dismissed from school after being abused by the school director (they said "caught in an affair with" but 1. she was 15 and 2. he was the headmaster ffs).
I read through all the trial papers at the exhibit, and I still don't really get why they killed her though. I understand that the only thing she was actually convicted (to death) for was taking money from the German secret service and never spying so, okay, but before that they really put a lot of effort into finding something on her (WAY more than anyone not in the army or government deserved, THREE secret services were trailing her ages before she took that money) so eeeeeh.
Over here the consensus seems to be that it really was more of a petty act of revenge on Holland for being neutral in WW1 which seems fair.
Anyway I spent a fuckload of money on a bunch of Mata Hari swag including a huge chiffon MATA HARI SCARF. Yes.
