i am brain dead, so this will have to serve

May 09, 2007 20:57

this is the letter i sent to my contributors. it's true for all of you as well. also, here's a great link from the washington post about the walk.

The walk is now behind me, and thanks to you and caring people just like you, the 2800 walkers and 300 crew in Washington DC alone raised over 7.4 million dollars!! Much of that money has already been earmarked for DC/VA/MD local programs, such as Food and Friends, and the Breast Cancer research center at John Hopkins University. The support you gave, both financially and emotionally, brings treatment options to the under-served, and research grants to help end this disease forever. Out of the 3100 participants this weekend, there were over 280 Breast Cancer survivors. They were a sight to behold.

Some great facts about this weekend that you were a part of:

-The route was 39.5 miles, through DC, Virginia and MD.
-I may be biased, but my team truly is the hardest working on the walk. We were up by 3:10am on Saturday morning, and didn't roll into camp until 7:45pm. We were up again, ready to work the next day at 4:30am. The crew is all volunteer.
-One of the members of my team, who as crew has zero fundraising requirement, raised over $37,000. She is an eleven year survivor that I have had the honor to work with over the past 5 years
-One of our walkers, a 63 year old grandmother from California, participates in nearly every Avon and Komen endurance walk each year, and this year will raise her MILLIONTH dollar!
-Someone is diagnosed with Breast Cancer every three minutes. Almost 180 during the time of the walk alone.

Thanks to you I've raised $15,000 and spent 25 days working or walking over the 6 years I've been involved in these events, and every moment is worth it.

I'll be the Team Captain for a pit stop up in Philly, at the Breast Cancer 3 day for Susan G. Komen for the cure in October - if you'd like to join me to work at this event, please let me know. :)

Once again, thank you from the bottom of my heart.

weekend, walks
