The recent mobilization of thousands of Latino students protesting
congress' immigration legislation were preceded 38 years ago by the
"Blowouts/Walkouts" of 1968 which took place in Los Angeles but which were
replicated also in places like Crystal City in Texas. The 1960s walkouts
were about educational reform. The issues, lack of culturally relevant
curricula for Latinos, school facilities, bilingual education,
retention, etc. The same issues we grapple today.
We have been fortunate through the efforts of Prof. Jose Sanchez,
College of the Arts and Professor Armando Vazquez-Ramos from Chicano and
Latino Studies department CLA to have confirmed the attendance of Sal
Castro (whose story is part of this HBO film) and Moctesuma Esparza the
Executive producer of the film and also a student leader during the 1960s.
I'M THERE!
