My brain is simultaneously completely focused and scattered to the winds.
All my thoughts are on LARP, but boy are they wandering to various subtopics...
Too many games, not enough me.
Starting to poke at League casting for the Palindrome run, mainly trying to figure out how set we are for the 'troublesome to cast' characters given the responses we have so far(since we've only got like 2/3 responses so far).
It looks manageable. I wish casting felt more like finding the perfect role for every person and less like damage control or finding the least problematic solution... but I feel reasonably comfortable with how things are looking. I just hope our remaining male responses include a few more Romantics...
Still percolating ideas for the Wagner/King Ludwig/Tim Powers inspired but not set in game...
Began poking around at material prices for the major prop for this League run. Won't be a bank breaker it looks like, thankfully. Will be sturdy, however.
Had a huge realization for a twist on the Dreamquest LARP concept which could work out to provide both great ambiance/theme and avoid the necessity of building it as a story telling game(of the 'you have to break character, become an NPC in someone elses story' variety)...
Oh, also have probably switched the order our next to game ideas. Dreamquest then Powers inspired... since Powers inspired needs a lot more research(or at least broader and less well defined research).
Began poking at what this run of League's rewrites will be. Because we will never run the same version of this twice, apparently. Also, the new trend is every run adds a character... I'm really thankful that this will probably be the last run for awhile however.
Finally, for anyone who read through my ramblings...
captainecchi and I are considering asking for some assistance in what will be our next LARP project. It's what we've referred to as our Dreamquest LARP. The initial concept was 'lets brainstorm how to do a mythos LARP that sticks close to the themes and tone of Lovecraft's own stories,' since, to be honest, Mythos in gaming tends to be a very distinct thing from the Mythos in Lovecraft's own works. We had the idea that the Dream cycle works would be a good place to focus. They aren't the basis for the major mythos tropes everyone knows, and include some themes that are a little more approachable(Hey, I love 'mankind is totally insignificant in the grand scheme of things, and if you encountered something that truly could somehow force just the full scope of this fact on you in a visceral fashion, it would break you' as a theme... it's just better for literature than games, I suspect...).
The very basic concept is that it will be a smaller game, maybe 11 or 12 players tops(probably less than that, 7-9 may be more what we're talking about)... Characters likely were acquainted when they were children, and were all dreamers who eventually lost the way to the dreams (ala Randolph Carter in parts of the dream cycle), and now as adults have found the way back and are returning to the dreamlands. The idea is to go for a very ambiance heavy game(lots of work on set dressing for instance), to try and conjure forth the foreign and dreamy vibe(aka, the Dunsanian influence so strong in HP's dream cycle), and try to bring up and address the various themes that are common throughout the stories.
Expecting it to be rules light(particularly compared to League... ah, lack of Harry Potter magic and forensic oriented detective characters is a good thing...), but with a decent likelihood of needing some GM NPCing for various locales... And that's the real reason I feel we need help. If we need one or two extra bodies to run it, and they'll be spoiled for it and unable to play, I figure it's a good idea to let anyone interested know about this ahead of time, so if they are interested in helping, and would enjoy helping out in ways other than just run time help, they have a chance to get involved... (aka, if anyone would be interested in writing/helping set piece work or similar things long before actual runtime assistance).
Anyway, if anyone would be interested... we'd love to hear from you. Though, admittedly, we probably won't be thinking of it too much until Palindrome is past.
