Still I Rise
Maya Angelou
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
You may write me down in history
With your bitter, twisted lies,
You may trod me in the very dirt
But still, like dust, I'll rise.
Does my sassiness upset you?
Why are you beset with gloom?
'Cause I walk like I've got oil wells
Pumping in my living room.
Just like moons and like suns,
With the certainty of tides,
Just like hopes springing high,
Still I'll rise.
Did you want to see me broken?
Bowed head and lowered eyes?
Shoulders falling down like teardrops,
Weakened by my soulful cries?
Does my haughtiness offend you?
Don't you take it awful hard
'Cause I laugh like I've got gold mines
Diggin' in my own backyard.
You may shoot me with your words,
You may cut me with your eyes,
You may kill me with your hatefulness,
But still, like air, I'll rise.
Does my sexiness upset you?
Does it come as a surprise
That I dance like I've got diamonds
At the meeting of my thighs?
Out of the huts of history's shame
I rise
Up from a past that's rooted in pain
I rise
I'm a black ocean, leaping and wide,
Welling and swelling I bear in the tide.
Leaving behind nights of terror and fear
I rise
Into a daybreak that's wondrously clear
I rise
Bringing the gifts that my ancestors gave,
I am the dream and the hope of the slave.
I rise
I rise
I rise.
I love this poem because it conjures a wide variety of emotions for me. These are just a few: Determination...I felt really crappy sitting on the sidelines of that Triathalon today. I didn't like it one bit that I watched my classmates running this thing that I have trained hard for all semester. I rejoiced in their victories...and believe me there was plenty of rejoicing to be done...but I still felt some sadness. E actually gave me a medal which I gave back to her...i told her to hold on to it for me until next year. I'm determined that I will complete that Triathalon. Acceptance...I read this and I realize that what I have is mine. No one can bring me down unless I let them. I also accept that there will always be people that try to bring me down. Little do they know that they will NEVER succeed. One of my favorite sayings is, "Be nice to nerds, you'll prolly work for one someday." Heehee! Basically, I'm done with those that are mean and spiteful and use me. You will not win. I promise, I will have the last laugh. ACCEPT IT! Happiness...this poem was in "Beauty Shop" which is a hilarious and wonderful movie that I just saw at Midnight Movie that I watched with three of my best friends in the entire world!!!! I had a wonderful time...even though I almost got into a fight for using the N (Moniker :) word...not really...i so would not EVER say that...it was just something really funny that two crackheads got started. Anyway I had a really good time!
