day thirteen - a fictional book

Instead of talking about one book, I'm gonna talk about three books. Specifically The Night Angel Trilogy by Brent Weeks. The three books contained in this series are titled The Way of Shadows, Shadow's Edge, and Beyond the Shadows. The series are a mature, violent, fantasy series centered around the happenings in the continent of Midcyru.

In The Way of Shadows we meet a young street rat named Azoth struggling to survive in a world that's dark, dirty, and full of horrible people. Through a series of events Azoth is taken in by the country's premiere wetboy, Durzo Blint. Azoth takes on the identity of Kyler Stern, a wetboy-in-training. Throughout the course of the book Kyler trains his heart out, falls in love, makes life-long friends, and gets his heart ripped out (metaphorically.) Kyler is everything you could ask for in a protagonist. He just feels so damn... human. The hand that life deals him will truly break your heart. (I don't want to mention too much since so much happens in the these books that it's best just to experience it for yourself.)

I initially picked up the books on a whim. I'm not the sort of person who buys a book without having read it beforehand. I was at the bookstore looking through the fantasy section when I spied the cover of the third book. It was just some ninja looking guy and some green smoke, but for some reason I picked it up. Then I saw that there were others and since it was only a trilogy I bought them straight away. I had never heard a single thing about the books or the author. (Though when I checked out the lady was just like "have you read them before? oh you're in for a treat.") I was insanely pleased. The characters are lovely. The writing is great. There's just a hint of something special in the writing that made me keep turning the page.

One of the things I really hate about stories like this is that I end up falling for these characters despite knowing that given the genre of the book... horrible, horrible things will happen to them.

For example... I started reading the manga series Berserk about four years ago and despite already knowing what happens at the end of the flashback I cannot bring myself to read it.
I just can't watch characters I love go through that (nor can I see to just be able to skip over it without reading. I know, I'm weird.) The Night Angel is no different. I must admit that I still haven't read The Way of Shadows just because I know with it being the last book that it's going to have a lot of wham moments.

This is just an insanely good series that I really do need to finish. I think once I finish A Game of Crowns (which is a whole 'nother post) that I'll finish this series. If only so that when I'm done I can go back and read it again.

This series was the first published work of Brent Weeks and I was highly impressed. It's a thoroughly entertaining read. He's got a new book scheduled for this year which I will defiantly be keeping an eye out for.

Basically if you like fantasy novels... go out and look this series up. It's super good!
