Vienna Holiday - finally!

Sep 30, 2013 21:10

Okay, so "I'll upload pics next week" has to be taken, um, figuratively and not literally..? Ahem. *g*
Anyway, I have everything on Flickr HERE

We went there by night train (first and second pic in the folder is our luxurious bed and even more luxurious breakfast) which is nice since you arrive in the morning, have the whole day ahead of you, and the "bed" gives you the opportunity to lie down, stretch out and nap. Much better than by coach!

About our sightseeing points:

Stephansdom (or lovingly "Steffl"): Vienna's biggest cathedral. THE Cathedral. One of the bell towers is open for visitors, and you have a great view across the city.

Hofburg, Schönbrunn, Gloriette: imperial residences. Famous for emperor Franz Joseph and Empress Elisabeth "Sisi". The Gloriette has a nice café and a glorious overview of Park and Castle Schönbrunn. The Hofburg has the famous dancing white horses, Lipizzaner. Who, when outside of the arena, are moving like smurfs. *lol*

Demel: very old confectionary shop. Deliverd sweets to, you guessed it, Empress Elisabeth. The only café in Vienna that has waitresses instead of waiters.

Vienna Experience: situated in an old monastery, shows multimedia scenes from Vienna's history. 3D movie, animatronic puppets... awesome.

Castle Bellevue: has big art exhibition, most famous painting is Gustav Klimt's "Kiss".

Musicals: Raimund Theatre has "Elisabeth". Three guesses about who...? Yup. :-) Ronacher Theatre has "Legally Blonde". Both very different and very awesome. i now own a pink rubber duckie.

Café Central. best Wiener Schnitzel ever.

Musikverein: the Golden Saloon, where the philharmonic orchestra of Vienna has its annual New Year's Concert. Never complete without the "Blue Danube" by Strauss. Also, different rooms with different acoustic for orchestra rehearsal. Awesome.

Questions? Ask. :-)
