Halloween Countdown, Day 6

Oct 06, 2015 07:12

First, a list from BuzzFeed: 49 Halloween Costumes All Book Lovers Will Appreciate.

Second, I was sorry to hear that Swedish author and playwright Henning Mankell died yesterday. It seems only fitting to devote today's countdown post to this giant of Nordic noir.

A mere glance at the cover art from some of his books underscores the haunting bleakness of his work.

October-worthy quotes:

“The fear of death came and went, though right now her life force was strong. But she had never forgotten what went through her mind when she balanced on the railing of the bridge. Life wasn't just something that took care of itself. There were big black holes you could fall into with long, sharp spikes at the bottom, monstrous traps.”
― Henning Mankell, Before the Frost

“Spirits don’t have faces. And yet we recognise them. We know who is who. Spirits don’t have eyes or mouths or ears either. And yet they can see and speak and hear.”
― Henning Mankell, Chronicler of the Winds

“Life is a flimsy branch over an abyss.”
― Henning Mankell, Italian Shoes
