Quick poll:
How many people know how to get to a DOS prompt from Windows XP?
[Start -> Run -> cmd]
How many people know how to trace a route across the Internet?
[From DOS, tracert (address)]
These points became an issue today when I was informed that our new web page was only accessible by its IP address from our office's Internet connection. If you typed in its name,
http://www.impact2818.com, you would arrive at the wrong site. I was then told to fix it.
Diagnosis: I can't; the problem lies elsewhere.
While I was on vacation over at another camp, they had migrated the web site to a new server and updated the forwarding address above to point to the new place. When tested, it worked. But it was tested from cities other than our own. From here, the forwarding address still pointed to the old IP address. I need more traces from elsewhere to prove it, but my take is that some local DNS hasn't been updated properly. It's possible that it's our server, I suppose, but I think the problem lies elsewhere. If the further tests show it's us, then I have a lot more studying to do to try and fix the mess.
For today, at least, my job was interesting. Even fun. I need more days like this.
