Halloween Party: Part One

Nov 03, 2010 01:05

"Happy Halloween!"

Stuck in a borderline insufferable loop, The Hostess seemed undeterred by either positive or negative reactions from the citizens flowing into the banquet hall. Perfect white teeth flashed in steady succession, her black and orange dress was immaculate, her blonde hair was in a stylish updo. Infuriating or endearing, take your pick.

Either way, it was all part of the plan.

Yes, there was a plan. Chiminigagua thought that the others might not take things quite so seriously. To those like Nemcatacoa or Bochica, this was more of a game. These people -- whether they could be classified as such or not -- were toys to be played with. And sometimes, when he was in one of his better moods, Chiminigagua might agree.

But they also had to be tested. Having been chosen, deigned acceptable for the streets of El Dorado, the gods did need to be sure they'd made the right choice. Besides, they were all getting too complacent. All the gifts, the quaint little shops opening up that made their lives almost normal, it was nauseating.

And what better time to set their little test into motion than Halloween? A time when the forces of darkness converged, and good and evil often came to blows. A time when those who may have become fat and lazy otherwise would have to show their true colors. The bar collapsing had only been the beginning. They had to keep a steady watch.

This would be perfect.

As immaculate and gorgeous as The Hostess, the Banquet Hall that had been set aside for the Halloween Party was decorated to the hilt. Orange and blacks were dominant amongst a plethora of fall colors, glitter and gleam of metal and sparkle had been matched with shadows and darkness in all the right corners.

A living shadow that passed unseen amongst them all, Chiminigagua surveyed the growing crowd. He looked from those who rushed for the food -- partly because of the cuisine, partly because of the gold plates and cutlery, and in some cases just because they were pigs -- to those who wandered to the dance floor. Music of the 'modern' era -- two thousand and ten was modern for some of them, was it not? -- mixed with classic Halloween hits, booming through large speakers while rolling strobe lights passed all sorts of theme appropriate shapes across the floor.

The citizens all seemed to be pleased, and Chiminigagua thought that was good. They should enjoy themselves, while they still had a say in the matter. He slid into a corner and reformed, solid, though still unnoticed. Then he watched some people chatting away nearby, while contemplating what he was about to do. Mentally preparing himself. It was a shame some of them couldn't do the same.

But that would be cheating. And they certainly couldn't have that.

So for now, let them play.
