[Second Floor] I will not freak out I will not freak out I will not freak out

All Cassie had gone to do was get lunch. She'd done it before. A million times. Well, it'd felt like a million times. She'd stopped at the ice cream place to get Pooch ice cream. It was weird how the demon dog from some fucked up hell dimension liked something so cold, but he'd reassured her that he'd eat all of it and wouldn't let any of it mess ( Read more... )

Peter ran his hands through his hair as he walked down the hallway to his room. Things had gotten weird. He suddenly felt like he couldn't stand being alone. Maybe it was a rebound from being empathic naturally or something? It didn't make much sense. He was always around people, but didn't midn being alone for a few hours. Now, he couldn't stand the thought. It literally terrified him.

He stopped and looked over his shoulder when he heard a door slam shut. No one was having an argument, and he didn't hear any running. He glanced around before quickly edging to the door that had been slammed. He pressed his ear against the door, hearing the erratic breathing. Great, someone was going to have a cardiac arrest at this rate. Peter opened the door and looked down to find Cassie on the floor, balled up.

"...Cassie?"

When Cassie heard the doorknob turn, a small squeak escaped her and she squeezed her eyes shut, afraid of who...or what was going to be on the other side. She bit her bottom lip, heart beating away at her ribcage.

When she heard her name, she opened her eyes, blinking away the beginnings of tears and looked up to find the paramedic...nurse...whatever. Peter. The superhero.

"Oh....hey," Cassie said, trying to sound not at all awkward and failing at it.

How do you play off cowering in a closet? You don't.

"Hey."

He glanced over his shoulder then squatted down in front of her. Alright, Cassie was a pretty tough girl. She took a beam to the back and walked around the hospital. So, why was she cowering in a closet? It seemed pretty opposite of what she was.

"I think we're kind of too old for blanket forts."

Her stomach sank when he crouched down beside her and she bit the inside of her cheek. This was a terrible second impression. Or was it the third? Did the texting count? She didn't even know why she cared if whether or not she impressed him. But she did.

"I'm not building a fort," Cassie replied, frowning a little. "I'm..." she grimaced, "hiding. Badly."

"You can hide in a fort, or under a bunch of blankets." Peter pointed out, offering his hand to her. "How about we find somewhere better for you to hide?"

Cassie flinched away when he lowered his hand. She looked from it to his face and back again. Swallowing hard, Cassie lifted her hand, moving to take his. "Can it...not be on my floor?" she asked softly as she let him help her up.

When she stood, the toe of her boot caught the edge of the carpet and she tipped towards him with a gasp.

Peter caught her easily, smiling down at her and helping her stand up right. What was wrong with her floor? She seemed fine sitting on the floor inside a linen closet. Peter made sure there wasn't anything tripping her before closing the door gently and motioning her to lead the way.

"Alright, no floors."

Her cheeks burned and she ducked her head. "Sorry." When she was righted, she took a step forward. Then stopped. She frowned. "I meant...not on the third floor."

She felt so fucking stupid. She didn't want to explain that she'd trapped Pooch in her room and didn't want to go anywhere near it.

"What's wrong with the third floor?"

"My room's up there," Cassie replied, voice lowering to a whisper. She grimaced, biting her bottom lip. "There's...something in my room. Something...scary," Cassie exhaled in a whoosh, looking up at Peter.

She hated being so fucking vulnerable.

Peter chewed on his lip. "You mean that dog you were talking to me about?"

Crap.

"Yeah," Cassie muttered, glancing to the floor for a minute then looked back to Peter. "I don't know what it is, but he really fucking creeps me out. I can't go back there. Not while he's still in there."

"You said he was something from some other dimension." Peter said as he pulled out his phone and scrolled through the text messages to show her. He wasn't sure what was happening to Cassie, but if he could help, he was going to.

Cassie's shoulders slumped and she rolled her eyes. "I remember the conversation, Pete," she said, looking up at him. "What's your point?" Her slight annoyance abated the fear of the demon dog, but not by much.

It certainly didn't stop her from standing so close to him. Personal bubble, what's that?

"That if you know what it is, it shouldn't freak you out that much." Peter explained. "Yeah, he looks weird, but you're used to it. Aren't you?"

He didn't get it. Of course, he didn't. But she was used to it. Kinda had to have people understand what you're talking about when you kill undead serial killers.

Cassie huffed, "Yeah, I'm used to it. But it scares the shit out of me!" She looked up at him. "I know it doesn't make sense, but when I came back from getting lunch, I opened the door and he was just...sitting there. Waiting for me. And I thought he was gonna eat my face off! So I ran."
