As the evening went on, Rush only grew more crowded.
The band played, people carried on their conversations, and the creaking of the ceiling was masked by the sounds of the party-goers having a good time. The slight flickering of the lights in the restaurant seemed to go unnoticed, until it happened rapidly enough to cause concern. For a moment, everyone paused and turned their attention to the ceiling, just in time for the first few pieces to fall.
Several people who had the sense to turn and leave may have made it out in time, but the rest were not as lucky, as several light fixtures suddenly crashed to the floor, shattering into pieces and causing sparks. Then the building went dark as the ceiling started to fall in sections in every room from the bar to the wine cellar. When a chandelier tumbled over the bar, the glass of the fixture and the bottles of alcohol it met shattered. It created a steady blaze that slid down, some of it extinguished by glass mirror that fell from its spot on the wall.
Cracks ran down the walls and continued into the floor, creating rifts panic-stricken guests stepped into. Screams shot through flames and shadows, emanating from those not only afraid for their own lives, but the friends and loved ones they'd lost in darkness. Many reached for each other as they scrambled for the exit, tripping over the barely alive and entirely lifeless bodies that littered the floor. Some remained level headed enough to crawl under tables, seeking any refuge from the destruction they could find.
It took less than five minutes to bring down the majority of what had once been one of the safest buildings in town, but for those trapped in it, every second felt like a lifetime. The exception to the rule went unnoticed in the fray; a man concealed by the shadows. He walked out the front entrance unharmed.
The dead and the dying were of no concern to him.
[OOC: Here's part two! Feel free to continue tagging part
one, but those inside and outside of the building after the disaster can start to respond here as well.]
