Subject: Tsunami Relief Efforts -- A Great Way To Pitch In

Today Ben Blair, 1995 South Dakota HOBY Alumnus and long-time
volunteer, contacted our office to let the HOBY family know about a
fantastic way we can offer relief to thousands people who survived
the recent earthquakes and tsunamis in South Asia. I encourage you
to thoroughly read this message and consider joining Ben by taking a
critical role in saving lives.
THE PROBLEM:
The death toll from the recent tsunami in South Asia is very quickly
reaching 100,000 and experts like the president of the World Health
Organization say that it is very plausible that the number of deaths
from disease could equal (200,000) or even surpass the deaths caused
during the actual tsunami. Unbeknownst to many, diarrhea is the
leading killer of children worldwide, and thousands of tsunami
victims are now at risk for being infected through broken sewage
lines and contaminated drinking water. Within days, epidemics of
intestinal and lung infections, diarrhea, typhoid and countless
other diseases will spread unless water purification systems are
delivered to the effected regions. It's imperative that clean water
is delivered to the people who need it in the next few days,
especially the children. Children have a smaller reservoir for water
in their bodies and are less able to compensate for a bad dose of
water. It is virtually inevitable that many young victims will soon
get diarrhea and probably cholera (the worst form of diarrhea which
can result in death due to dehydration).
WHAT'S BEING DONE
Wisconsin Pharmacal Company (WPC) is a small company based in
Jackson, Wisconsin that manufactures outdoor health and safety
products. One of the products made by WPC is called Potable Aqua®,
an iodine-based water purification tablet. The tablets are dropped
into water and in 30 minutes can kill virtually all bacteria,
viruses and other microorganisms caused by water-borne disease. WPC
has created a Web site (www.potableaqua.com) where individuals,
companies, foundations, etc, can go online and make a donation of
bottles to be sent to three relief organizations: World Vision
International, AmeriCares and The World Bank Group. Bottles can be
purchased at $1.44/bottle, far below the bulk/wholesale rate of $5-
$9 at Wal-Mart or REI.

Moreover, WPC will top-off each order with 20% more tablets --in the
name of each respective donor. For example, if you donate 100
bottles, WPC will donate an additional 20 bottles in your name.
There is no minimum, but WPC encourages orders of at least 10
bottles because they need to ship them in bulk (not one-by-one) to
the above-mentioned relief organizations.
One bottle contains 50 tablets. Two tablets will purify 25 liters
(about 6.5 gallons) of water.
HOW YOU AND YOUR FRIENDS CAN HELP:
1) Spread the word: Let people know about the Web site, what you're
doing. Put it on your blog, mention it in chat rooms, send emails to
friends.
2) Commit to Service: Create a service project at home, school,
church, network of friends, etc. Gather momentum with your networks,
do a fund drive where you can collect money locally and make one
large contribution from your organization
3) Make a donation: every child in affected by the tsunami faces a
serious health risk. Every bottle helps. $1.44 can give one child
clean water for 25 days OR 25 children immediate clean water.
Remember, an additional 20 percent will be donated for every order.
4) Educate yourself
Lastly, if you have any questions regarding this service opportunity
or WPC, you are welcome to contact Ben directly:
