&part one

There it was again. I knew I'd heard something.

I pushed my computer away and moved off of the bed, walking around to the window and pulling up the blinds. My eyes scanned the dark, orange-lit parking lot below, trying to see around the thin branches that scraped against the glass, but there was nothing outside.

I was about to turn away again when, quite suddenly, a face appeared upside down outside the window. I couldn't help but scream, jumping and hitting my head on the bar of the bed above me. I immediately clamped my hands to my head and backed away a few steps, gazing at the face in stark and quite perfect confusion.

It was a man. A young man, with the most boyish features I'd ever seen on such a mature face. It was the smile that made him seem so young, though it was hard to tell how nice it really was with him upside down like that. I stayed immovable, so caught off guard that I didn’t know which reaction to give him.
