Updates on the Things

I'll probably be a bit sporadic for the next two weeks, because of finals. (There is no emoticon to express my feelings. x_x seems pretty close, though.)

Anyway, last week I was recced TWICE on tw_spotlight, and I'd like to thank heddychaa and _lullabelle_ for making me the absolutely thrilled when I found each rec.

Also, heddychaa's awesome month of advent fics continue. It's like an outpouring of fantastic fandom every day. I wish fandom was alway like this.

The new Torchwood beta-finder twbeta_archives community has been launched. I'm keeping a close eye on this community. For one, I might want a brit pick for a longer fic I'm working on. I also really want to volunteer, but my grammar is atrocious. I might offer my services for idea-bouncing or something, though. It's a wonderful idea, especially considering the way the fandom has fundamentally changed since the early days.

The Jack/Ianto LAS challenge that everyone has been promoting sounds so cool, and I'm tempted to join, but I'd honestly prefer a general TW LAS. Jack/Ianto tends to be standing background on my fics, but I haven't yet written about them, and I'm not sure I'd want to start in a competition.

Also, this conversation has made me decide that Torchwood and comic books are clearly neck-and-neck for my craziest fandoms. Both of them have incredible amounts of fluctuating/optional/changing canon, both of them swing between some well-written and lots of terribly-written material. Both are CRACK.

And this segues nicely into the fact that I've finally seen the opening episode of Young Justice, and I can go off to read 90scartoonman's review later. I was cautioned by my only RL DC animated friend that pilots are normally not indicative of general quality, so while I'm a bit disappointed, I still have hope.

Well, I really like the look of it, although it's no DCAU.

But listen, all four of the characters chosen appeared in Teen Titans in some way, and while I can see the argument for Robin, I don't think it was a good idea.

PLUS, no girls? Really? I understand that you didn't have a lot to choose from, but you invented Aqualad, (what are those water-stick things, exactly?) why not give us Aquagirl II? She's a minority as well. (Oh, this is going to bother me the whole show) Or Secret? Or Empress? Or just make someone else up?? And yes, they added female character eventually. But the vast majority of the two-parter with boys only.

I don't really like angry!Roy. It's overdone and tired. The dialogue was decidedly not impressive. "Today is the day" is not an exciting catchline. Sorry.

Now the background chatter as they walked to the HQ was great. "Isn't Flash's sidekick Speedy?" "No, Speedy is Green Arrow's sidekick." "But that doesn't make any sense!" Hilarious. It's clear the writers know their canon, I just want better writing.

They are setting up an interesting long-term storyline, which could go either way at this point.

I do like the goggles on Kid Flash. They're a good idea for a speedster.

Also, I always held that the Aqua-familiy fish-telepathy should be at least somewhat usable among humans. In my fic, Cerdian always had a certain low-level emotional telepathy. So a BIG thumbs-up for that.

Dubblix is kinda cool. (GUYS, DUBBLIX IS ANIMATED. DUBBLIX) Guardian too, even though he didn't have much of a character.

This Robin seems like Tim to me, which does make me smile.

Again, I think they might have done better to adapt the original YJ storyline. Like, they can save Secret, and then the League can find out and establish Young Justice because they need some oversight and training? Or Young Justice could have pre-existed the first episode, and it could have opened with Roy quitting because he felt like they weren't being given enough trust and then the storyline could happen. I like origin stories, but the first ten minutes just felt awkward.

EVERYONE, MEET YET ANOTHER JUSTICE LEAGUE OF MEN. (With Wonder Woman, Hawkgirl and Black Canary. Not. Ok.)

NOT OKAY WITH THE WAY MARTIAN MANHUNTER'S NEICE IS USED. She is stereotypical shy and awkward new-kid (even more than Kon!) and shoved in at the last second. They couldn't have used her for the whole episode? I am not fooled by your use of Dinah as the trainer. The vast majority of the regular cast is male. I'm getting really tired of it.

In conclusion...Aqualad is going to be the leader? Okay. I can swing it. Tim Robin can be the techie. Aqualad has gills and his hands are webbed, so I'm a bit excited by him. And I admit to excitement about Dinah as well. She's awesome.

BUT WHO THE HECK PICKS THE TEENAGERS TO BE THE COVERT OPS??
