But once Ianto is working for Jack, there's no more evidence that he smokes than there is evidence that Jack smokes. In fact we have to consider that Jack may only want healthy people working for Torchwood, when you consider all the running about they have to do on a daily basis. Smoking affects the lungs and will cause you to get out of breath more quickly than those who don't smoke. On top of that, Ianto strikes me as someone who cares about his appearance and health once he's in a relationship with Jack, which helps seperate him from Gareth the real-life person - although Gareth has apparently stopped smoking and lost weight since getting married in November :)
I would think a writer's / reader's individual views about smoking will also have an impact on whether they want Ianto smoking as an adult or not. Each to their own I suppose. :)
