So Friday's miraculous 4-1 home win against Grimsby was a bit misleading, then. The not-so-mighty Gulls were brought back down to earth with a bang last night, getting thumped 5-0 away at Mansfield (the third time this season we've conceded 5 goals in a match). Of course, the ex-player factor was at work here: Martin Gritton bagged a hat-trick.
Still, we've been in worse positions before. Last year, for instance, we were well adrift at the foot of the table before some near-miraculous late-season form saw us to safety. And 6 years ago, we were almost certain to go down, until the final day of the season when we won 3-2 away at Barnet.
The thing is, there's just something about this season that seems final. The change of ownership, the new manager/coach (some Czech bloke who happens to be the new chairman's mate and who nobody has ever heard of), injuries, the ability to throw away promising leads, last-minute goals let in. It's all very very depressing. At least the Conference has more teams in and around London. Every cloud, they say, has a silver lining.
