Duncan Lowne Day

Jun 10, 2007 21:50

I lost a friend last week. In the small hours of Friday, in an NHS hospital in Oxford, Duncan Lowne lost his battle with brain cancerI will miss the many ways he made the world a better place. Whether it was as a talented DJ (I'm glad I have some of his music to remind me of him), an intellectual (it's a damn shame he didn't get to finish his PhD ( Read more... )

I was thinking the exact same thing as you - a birthday is a far more appropriate day than a deathday. life beginning and all that.....

It seems that this would be a) a perfect opportunity for all those who loved Duncan and who he loved to get together and commemorate the best of life, but also b) an opportunity to create a time in which, despite geographical distances, people who care about each other can b doing the same thing at the same time, sharing something special that connects you to each other as well as to Duncan. I really think the world should have more holidays like that.

Yes, to all of that. Last year I did have a synchronised toast with people around the world as a one-off - a group of people who had met at my other friend Duncan's wedding attempted to all raise a glass at the same time. Melinda was here in Seattle, I was in either Indiana or Cleveland, and there were others around Britain and Eastern Europe. There was actually something really nice about doing that, just as a way of feeling fleetingly in touch with people many miles away.

I'll toast to that. I've been trying to take this as a swift kick in the pants. I miss my friend, but one of the best ways to celebrate him (other than the drinking, of course) is to go out and do all of those things I've been meaning to do. I can't say I'll get to all of them; but I think the real travesty would be not crossing anything off of the list.

Also, I do really like the idea of a D-Day, and I think his birthday is a fine day to celebrate it!

I think that's a useful, constructive way to respond. I should do the same. As the slowness of my reply hints at, I've not been good about this so far - I kind of buried myself in real-world-avoidance for a while, but now is as good a time as any to put a stop to that.

This is an excellent idea, I've added mention of it to the wiki I started:

Hi.
I am trochee's fiancée and I just wanted to give you my condolences. J has mentioned you a few times and I saw this on his friends list.

This was a beautifully written eulogy and made me wish I had known the guy.
