I get two PBS channels up in this bitch. The one was having this cool archaeological excavation of Stalag Luft 3, where it is rumored that the never-discovered by the Germans tunnel was. The archaeologists found the trick sewer that was rumored to be the entrance, and invited three former POWs from the camp to come look at it. Hearing these guys ( Read more... )

I've heard some really incredible stories from the different wars on tv and from a few friends who fought in the later ones. One of my favorites is the story of the guy (I cant remember his name) who was a P.O.W. in vietnam. The captors videotaped the guy, having him recite from a piece of paper, basically stating that he was fine, and not being mistreated, etc.
When the bigwigs in washington got hold of the recording, one bright boy noticed that the prisoner was blinking...a lot. Like he had something in his eyes. Turned out the dude was blinking in fucking morse code! Told them his location, that he was being tortured, everything. They knew exactly where to come and get him. Incredible situation, and an incredible man.
I cannot imagine what it must have been like to dig those tunnels.
Amazing.

I dl'ed it for addition to the party music rotation. Was searching for a song with "Diamond" in the title and his name came up with that song beside it. So, I figured that was the music gods telling me to get it. I'd never heard it before and wasnt sure if it was a good one. Next party, you're singin'!!

That morse code shit is pretty god damned cool, too. I hope the bad guys found out AFTER his rescue. And the prescence of mind to make TWO statements at once using two forms of communications in two languages is also bad-ass.

My high school physics teacher lived in a town with a guy who is now a Trivial Pursuit question. This helicopter pilot was shot down over 'Nam. He had a really bad abdominal wound and couldn't move. He couldn't get help, he couldn't get food. He intentionally let his gaping would get infected. The maggots would come eat away the rotting flesh, and he would eat the maggots as he became hungry. He was like that for a few days the story goes.

As for the tunnels they say that it was a claustrophobic's worst nightmare. Two by two by 300. Ick.
