Longfellow Middle School 2011-2012: A Preview

Aug 22, 2011 22:07

First Hour is split into four one-quarter classes:

Computer Exploration: Basically, touch-typing and some internet exploration. Fresh-faced teacher. Mickie should pass with flying colors.

Spanish: Met the teacher; she seems nice. Mickie has learned a bit of Spanish in elementary school, so this should be a breeze.

Art: The room was shut tight, alas.

Personal Development: This room was also locked and dark, so we never got to find out what "Personal Development" is.

Second Hour, Enriched Language Arts: Plenty of reading, including the novel Holes. Her teacher is confident and enthusiastic. Mickie liked her on first sight. There will be homework in this class, but with Mickie that's pretty much par for the course.

Third Hour, Enriched Science: Mrs. J complimented Mickie right away - "very pretty" - and told her that they would build a marble-sized roller coaster out of paper and a working miniature lighthouse. Mickie's reaction was :-3 (I love my girl geek).

Fourth Hour, Social Studies: Pretty teacher, says Mickie. A quick look at the syllabus makes me think she'll learn plenty and be challenged and rewarded. Just what she needs, says I.

Fifth Hour, Band: I know the teacher (duh), so Mickie can expect to be gently teased on a regular basis. It's good for her. Hopefully he's okay with her playing flute. Can't see why he wouldn't be.

Sixth Hour, Math: Nice lady. Promised Mickie that she would be just fine: "Sixth grade math made me cry, but I promise you won't have problems." Also, a very pretty classroom - plant-based, with a mural on one wall.

Seventh Hour, "Excel": Nothing to do with the computer program (Mickie should thank her lucky stars), but a mixed-grade accelerated reading class that should keep Mickie on her toes. Nice enough teacher, but with hideous makeup. (Thus ends my shallow statement.)

New Principal: enthusiastic, friendly, funny. Doesn't talk down to the kids, which is a biggie. Kind of cute. (Whoops, another shallow statement.) Mickie is in good hands with him as an administrator.

Other: Mickie was impressed with the courtyard, the cafeteria ("I can sit wherever I want! Cool!") and especially the library. That's my girl!

So yeah, in two days I'll be the mother of a middle school student. I may or may not weep. Depends on the traffic.

And now I'm tired...
