In which Elbie holds her nose and jumps into being the mother of a preteen.

There I stood, in the makeup aisle of the dollar store, debating on whether or not I was ready for this...

Mickie will start middle school on Wednesday. So far, she's resisted the usual trappings of the transition from girlhood to young womanhood. She doesn't like boys, she doesn't want to shave her legs, she plays video games... Heck, sometimes it's a challenge just to get her to take a shower! (Her, reading this: "Hey!")

But today, she took a step. She picked out a palette of lip gloss and some brownish-black mascara. I had to dissuade her from the brightly colored eyeshadow (too big a step), and her skin is healthy enough to not need cover-up.

Still. My baby is wearing makeup.

I remember my first makeup. Mom got me a handful of stuff (I think some was secondhand, which ew) and left me to my own devices. The results... kohl eyeshadow applied with a heavy hand. Yeah, not pretty.

I took it upon myself to show Mickie how. After all, makeup looks best when it looks natural. (For everyday, that is. Special occasions call for something pretty.) She was an apt pupil - light of hand and quick to learn. She also has very, very long eyelashes - a coat of mascara made them pop, and when she touched it up... Wow.

She's becoming a very becoming young lady.

Ask me later about how I feel about that.

She just enthusiastically chose the icon for this entry, so there's that. Here's hoping she finds the balance between young lady and geek that she'll be happy with.
